Pink Birdsnest?

I had a nice Pink Nest Frag, growing well - nice branches.
Last week it fell over and landed in my Carpet Anemones Mouth. By morning, one full branch was stuck in the anemone, I figured it would give up and spit it out. It did, but the Bird Nest died within the day.
I hate my Anemone:)

I ran a a 20kab and a10kab on the otherside of the tank for one year the mother colony was under the 20k and I placed a frag under the 10k I had fast growth on both of them the frag turned really light pink and mother colony turned greenish in the shaded area's and nice pink in the light area's.
now I have switched to 14k pheonix and the color has changed on the mother colony to a bright bright awsome pink no green at all,and the frag(not really a frag anymore you could get15 to 20 frags out of it) is kind of coloring up nothing like the mother colony

Wow! Nice Birdsnests everyone... I especially like Konadogs ... very pretty.

Ereefic: I am amazed at the brightness of your BN every time i see that pic! Fantastic!

Here is mine. One of my favorite corals! Recently fragged. :eek2:
Higher light = more pink / Lower light = more green. Kept under 14K near top

scarab65: Nice! I was also wondering if the yellow tipped birdsnets would keep the yellow tips!

Actually it is not really yellow in my tank, more like light peachy. But as long as there is growth, the tip will show that colour as well as the polyps. The polyps will gradually change to pink as it goes down the branch. It quite cool!

Here is a pic of mine...I received this Birdsnest from www.reefscience.com on March 02, 2005 and was under some 10K's for this first few weeks. It grew some mad spikes, I then switched to 20K's and it stopped growing as fast but the spikes built its "fleshiness" (unlike under the 10K's the growth spikes were white). Water movement in my aquarium is done with a Tunze 6100 with single controller...

By the way everyone...you all have some sweet birdsnest's...im jealous! I want to buy more now, lol

Scarab: Nice, I have a frag of the pink birdsnest with yellow tips, so far it has been holding its color well! I'm glad to hear that it should hold its color long-term!

Man after I opened the thread and saw that damn Aquabats avatar again my heart sank, lol.

My first attempt at a birdsnest was a wild speciman, and didn't make it, I still want to try again with a frag though.

Since this thread is back here are older pics of my two:

FWIW I got a couple of frags with my first two shipments of sps frags almost 3 years ago and they didnt make it(while everything else did fine). I was hesitant to try another for quite a while. Both of these have done great. I think it's like anything else in that getting a good healthy piece to start with is key:)

In the BOCP , the picture on the cover is mentioned inside the text. He stated that the branches grew in the think and contorted manner under the output of a pump or dump bucket (can't remember at the moment). If you have the book check it out. With this in mind, I would assume that thinner branched specimens may have come from calmer waters.

Speaking of birdnests...

I got a frag of a "Paletta's Most Wanted Birdnest" at a frag swap a few months ago. I've never heard of it or seen a full colony but I wanted a birdnest and I couldn't resist the label on the bag so I chose it over the regular birdnest frags.

Does anyone have this piece or have a pic of a full colony? It was very small when I got it and it now has 4 small branches emerging but it's pretty difficult to tell what color it is. It appears purplish-pink but like I said, it's too small to really tell.

Thanks!

I have horrible luck with them. Never figured out why. One thing I remembered vividly is stepping on them in murky and silty shorelines in the red sea and indonesia. I quickly learned to wear jellies(plastic sandals) on my feet.;)

Sounds interesting .. I'd love to see a picture also. :D

those are really some nice birdnest. I just got a frag of pink birdnest, but the color is brown now. Hope it will turn pink pretty fast. :) How long did you have yours before it start to change color?

I have a question for other ORA green polyp birdsnest owners (seriatopora guttatus). Does yours die off in the middle of the colony? My colony right now is about 5"x5" and the inside of it has died. I think this is due to lack of light getting to the middle. At night the polyps seem to close up a bit and you can see into the middle but during the day they open up to the point where they block light from getting to the middle of the colony. It is almost as though they are trying to "self-destruct" or something. My colony is in good flow and I can tell that the flow does still make it to the inside of the colony so I'm pretty sure it isn't due to flow.

I know it was mentioned earlier in this thread that some people's birdsnests seemed to grow like a weed and then slow down. My take on this is that if the middle of the colony dies, the entire colony is no longer linked together. It becomes a bunch of frags (outside branches) connected to each other through a dead skeleton. So each frag has to fend for itself and doesn't have the colony's total energy reserves to use for growth. This could explain why the growth would slow down. However, mine is still growing just as fast as it did when it was smaller and the middle was still healthy.

What puzzles me the most is that I have a pocillopora damicornis that is the same size. The branches are a little farther apart but when the polyps are fully extended during the day they block just as much light from the inside of the colony. Yet, this colony still has good tissue, color, and polyp extension towards the middle.

Travis,
Mine does that but it's still growing fast. It's probably 6 or 7" across now. I'm guessing that's normal behavior but I'm glad you brought that up to see what everyone else has to say.
