Pink Rhino?

Anyone ever heard of a Pink Rhino?

I am not sure if it is a zoanthid or palythoa but I just picked a polyp up the other day.

The guy I got them from travels to shows all over the country and I have bought from him the past. I just don't know if I trust my latest purchase from him.

I searched all over RC and Google for Pink Rhinos but only find Blue Rhinos. I think he said this is a Candy Apple morph and they are extremely limited right now. It is a good looking coral but it isn't anything over the top IMO.

It has a nice green center and then pink all around that. I will try and get a picture later when I get home from work.

Thanks

The guy called them pink rhinos.

I will look up pink elephant when I get home. They look like lord of the rings or spartans pride to me

extremely limited right now

everyone says that, i just seen 500 colonies come in and about 20 morphs i havent seen before, but from one spot to the next that means probably 200 or more of those rocks came in else where also

Ive heard pink elephants also.. Never heard about the rihnos... But new names pop up every day:)..lol

I don't buy the whole "limited" line we get fed in this hobby all the time.

I think the zoanthid I got is good looking and has potential. I don't care for the ridiculous name game that has caught hold in this hobby. It is a complete joke and just a way for people to charge insane amounts.

I posted my question because I am a little leary of this guy at this point and if he was just feeding me a line of "bull", I won't need to worry about shopping with him again.

Care to say the shop/guys name? maybe you can check the feedback forum/search to check out his feedback stats.

I know who you were buying from and he generally names his own zoas whatever he wants. I saw the paly you picked up too (this was an ebay purchase right). If you like the zoa/paly that is all that really matters. I have bought a ton of zoas from him and they come in healthy and happy

No, it was not an Ebay purchase and unless the guy you buy from is from Utah, you don't know him.

I bought this at a local event called FragStock. We had about 12 vendors there. Half of them were from out of state and the others were local stores.

The guy's name is Brandon but I don't know if he has a company name these days. He used to be part of Reef Kingdom with a guy named Jared Butler. They sold that business and went their own ways a few years back. Jared now runs a company called Rocky Mtn. Frags and Brandon does his own thing on the side.

Jared has awesome stuff and gives members here in Utah great prices. Brandon on the other hand has been known to make up names and overprice his stuff. Of course, I found all that out after the fact.

I was off, there is a guy on ebay who is also selling pink rhinos that sounds exactly like the zoas you bought. Thought that was who you got them from, I was wrong.

Again it all comes down to how you feel about them, do you like them?

Pink Rhinos are AMAZING! They were first introduced by Will from AquaSD. I have them and they are insane. If they look like a candy apple red but instead of red they have pink skirts, they are extremely hard to find and slow growers for me anyways.

Post a pic and I can tell you for sure. You can ask Will about them from AquaSD about them too.

Never heard of it. But why get caught up in names? If YOU dig it thats all that matters :smokin:

I normally stay pretty quite on these forums but your comment got me thinking Friday. With genetics advancing like it is we are seeing that many corals exist as hybrid species making it harder and harder to identify individuals on a species basis, its unfortunate that marketers use this to there advantage but trade names are almost required for identification purposes (associated with care of the morph).

As nice as zoa.id is perhaps its time for all of us that frequent the zoanthid forum of RC to start making a general identification thread? Or perhaps it's time for one of us to create zoawiki? Either way a venue designated for morph identification and care focusing on ease of use and discussion would really help the hobby out.

and Dan I think your referring to Palythoa grandis also called cinnamon palys.

Oh no, another thread hijacked by the Zoa name game rant...

I've purged enough comments to cut this thread in half. As mentioned, there are plenty of threads to discuss pricing, the name game, etc. There is no reason scaring off members from posting in this forum, wanting to know about a zoa, wanting to try to find or identify something by the name (because that's how many of them are identified like it or not)... by copy/paste inquisitions or turning their threads into your own personal tirade. Plenty of us have strong feelings about these matters (including us soulless evil mods), so feel free to express your opinions in a calm and respectful manner. BUT out of respect for those that DON'T want to participate, let's do it in the right place.

 I will start a separate thread for this if you'd like to discuss, so let's keep the OP's question on topic here.

If I could get a decent pic, I would post it. LED's are a bugger to take pics with and my camera is a cheap point and shoot.

Now that you mention AquaSD, I think I recall my guy talking about how a lot of his stuff comes from AquaSD.

My guy told me he has had these Pink Rhinos for about 6 months and 6 polyps has turned into like 10. He said they are the slowest growers he has and was on the waiting list for 1.5 years while his supplier grew them out.

Thank you for your response!
