pink yuma help

REEFRHEAD

New member
ok i got lucky enough to get a sweet pink yuma with a line of white bubbles from the mouth to the edge and the edge is greenish white, ok so its only been in my tank for like 3 days and at first i had it in too much flow and it wouldnt expand well then i moved it and it expanded alot more except for one side its rinkled up most of the time, this is also the part of the mushroom that is getting the most flow so i think it might have somehting to do with it , but anyways the yuma had expelled its waste twice now atleast, and also it looks like maybe its trying to eat something all the time by closing up part of itself and pushing toward the mouth, also the mouth isnt all nice and pointing upward its more flat aginst its body, so basically my question is do you think
A. its in too much flow?
B. its just still acclimating to my tank?
C. its under too much light? which i doubt because its to the side of a 250mh and 165 vho actinics about 30 inchs down and also shaded. next to my blastos
D. its hungry and i should try to feed it?
E. something you fine reefers can come up with?
Thanks all in advance ;)

P.S i dont have a good enough camera to post pics so its not worth it

the yuma doesnt look real happy today its more wrinkled up and closed and the mouth is a little open not much. ill move it back alittle more next to big rock so almost no flow hits it. but im worried about this beautiful hard to find yuma any help would be appreciated

I always start my new rics off in low flow and low light, even shaded areas unless they are captive raised coming from someone I trust, then I will start them in slightly higher light. Also, it can be hard to know how much light is appropriate for a particular type of yuma. Some of the bubbly orange and pink ones enjoy a lot of light, whereas some others come from deep water and require subdued lighting. Anyway, it does sound like this guy is stressing and the odds of it coming through IMO are not good. I have not had any experience with this particular type of ric, so I can't comment on what conditions they like, but there is another on this forum that has one that I believe to be the same type as you have. They just fragged it a short time ago, but I don't know how that is going. Maybe you can find the thread and ask them about their ric. I think the user name is lokelanie or something like that. BTW, I hope this one did not come from Cquarium because the one they had and sold recently looked really bad IMO.

no this yuma came from my lfs. yes i saw that he fragged his yuma and yes it does look to be the same yuma, i asked him about it he just had a problem with it disattaching itself from its rock and thats why he decided to frag his yuma. it makes me think that the yuma was getting too much flow because this had happened to a few other reefers that i know with their yumas. the yuma looks better now but its seems to just keep expelling waste maybe its completely cleaning itself out or something? also the yuma was at my lfs for about a week so i know it was a shipping incident or anything. I put this yuma next to my burnt orange bubbly yuma at first but this was a spot with too much flow so i decided to move it asap. so i hope it pulls through and also do you think i should try to feed it if the mouth closes completely and looks happy?

If the yuma is always "gaping", it is not a good sign. Every time I have seen this, the yuma died within a couple of weeks. I guess I don't see any harm in trying to feed it if it stops gaping. If it feels like eating, it will eat. Yumas can be a real headache. It's hit or miss for wild collected ones. I have had 100% success with captive raised ones. I do still buy wild caught ones now and then, but I try to get ones that have been in a tank for at least a month.

ok thanks for the input, the mouth is more closed now but im still worried about it. it is still putting out waste more thinner now and more transparent than before. the mushroom over all looks alot better than it did before what do you guys think about fragging it?

i dunno about fragging yours. I fragged mines, not as a last effort, but because it was unattached to any substrate. The thing seemed healthy when I fragged it.

1 week before I cut it. You can see on the leftside its curling alittle because the foot on that side is starting to unattach.
Not 100% positive, but I think it went walking from the flow, i couldnt never get mysid shrimp to stay long enough on the mouth for it to eat... Anyways I have pc lighting if that helps.

thanks lokelani ya your mouth is much more healthy than mine but mine has closed significantly but we will see what the morning brings. also i use a sand cleaner to put over the mushroom then sqeeze sum mysis into it and wait for it to slowly fall on the mushroom then leave it over it untill the mouth grabs ahold of the food then i leave it over it still for a while because my shrimp are notorious stealers, i suggest trying this if you have problems or just a clear big tube big enough to fit over your corals and since its a mushroom its ciruclar and not too big so it helps ;). you coudl also just turn off all your pumps but this was never very appealing to me.also how far under your lights is yours? ya im do ahve a 250mh but it is on the bottoma nd shaded so i should be ok ;)

I would definitely keep it in shade & low flow and stop moving it. The only wild ones I've had luck with were treated this way.
I would NOT frag it, as that would be a death sentence to an already stressed yuma. It sometimes takes a few weeks before these guys are even remotely comfortable in a tank.
Try chopping your mysis into smaller portions before feeding too.
BTW- I like your feeding method!

tahnks Kathyc the feeding method works great to keep those pesky shrimp and fish away ;) yes i plan on not touching it for a long time, i figured it is def still acclimating in my tank, it looks alot better today the mouth is more closed and pushing up so i think we may have a survivor here folks ;) fingers crossed. i will def try brineshirmp before mysis though for size and shape. the only thign i was going to do frag wise if the yuma started really looking bad was take a razor blade and cut the foot a little i dont know if this works for yumas but for other reg non ricordea mushrooms that is how the mushrooms multiplies by leaving a portion of its foot behind and the portion starts growing a new body, now this will take a while but it does work, but i dont know it if works for ricordeas though.

I've tried cutting the foot on Yumas that have started to deteriorate and have had no success, they've all melted away.
I agree it works way better on mushrooms.

Good to hear the mouth is more closed up today! Do you have any pics of it?

no no pics yet i need a better camera other wise eveyrone will just say its blurry but the shrooms seems to open and close everyday and expell waste, now i have also heard it could be the color leaving "sry i dont cant spell the zoo thing", now if it is does this mean i dont have it in enough light? but it is alot more closed right now but looked good during peak time, i am goign to tyr to feed it tonight ill tell you how it goes later ;)

Do you mean it opens & closes it's mouth everyday? When it opens, is it round or oblong?
Usually when they are expelling that much...I can't spell it either...they are usually stressed, so adding it into more light is still a poor idea.
Definitely try feeding it lightly and pls let us know how it goes! :)

hard to say without a picture, but sounds to me like it is getting too much flow...my yumas react to sudden changes in flow by sticking their mouths out and the bubbles seem almost pointy...its a very definate reaction...they also do the clurling you are talking about if flow is stopped during a water change and then restarted...picture would really help here though...any picture

ok ill take a pic today of when it is curled up, but most of the time the mouth is a little oblong when it is curled up but when its open its round. it is def in a low flow area the bubbles are nice and full and round and not deflated like when its in too much flow bigdaddyadam. i could however possible move it back a little move so almost no flow hits it because now about a 1/4 of the mushroom is getting some flow nothing major just the bounce back from my return off the far wall. no flow stopping or anything when i do water changes i dont have to shut off my pumps because i have come up with a great way to do waterchanges idea ;) im going to feed it this afternoon when its nice and open so i will let eveyrone know how it goes later ;)
