What type of placement would be best for this with regards to flow and lighting?

Medium/high lighting and medium flow seem to work.

I read elsewhere that they liked high flow, but mine didn't open up much when I had it too near a powerhead. Now that it's in medium flow, it's more fully extended.

They will take high flow, but it needs to be a wide flow rather than the harsh laminer flow something like a MaxiJet gives off. A little distance from a Tunze-like pump would be a better option.

I think that they are suppose to be placed in sand but I could be wrong!
