Was at the LFS yesterday and mentioned getting a goby pistol pair. Because I'm a repeat customer the owner said, "you have a glass tank right"? I said yes. He said pistol shrimp shrimp should only go in acrylic tanks long term. huh?? Yeah when the shrimp get mature its not unheard of for them to snap their claw with such volume or a odd frequency that the glass will actually crack. I don't remember if it was the frequency or volume. Seemed like a line of crap but didn't make sense coming from the owner. He knew I would buy them from his store. Clue me in if there is such logic or not????????:eek1: :eek1:

A sound so loud that your glass would break would have to be like a gun shot I would think. Am I turing into a pain at my LFS to the point were they don't want my money.???

Well, I have two different pistol goby pairs and they rarely "pop." When they do it isn't that loud. I have a tiger and a candycane. The candy cane is tiny. I think it could stun pods, but not a cleaner shrimp (like the u-tube video). The tiger is bigger but still after several years the glass is intact. There is a huge variety of pistol shrimp in the ocean. Many don't pair with gobies or anything at all, and some pair with anenomes. Some are huge and might be capable of cracking glass, but not the little guys that we get for our gobies.

what tank are they in? that 210 must have some pretty thick glass. You read all these problems folks have on hear with total disasters with their tanks but I've never read anything about cracked glass from a pistol

No I have one in a Red Sea Max (34 gal) and one in a 29 gal bio-cube.

I have never heard of a pistol breaking a tank but I have heard of Mantis shrimp breaking glass and fingers.

I'll mention that next time. Those guys must be near the top of the invert food chain. just watched a video.. way mean

I have read they have the power of a .22 cal bullet, But that said I had snaps for 4 years only at night and my tank is still in one piece..

that is my next and last fish addition to my 28 gallon nano. i have 2 false perc clowns and a skunk cleaner. i plan to get a goby and pistol shrimp combo. i have read that it is important to make sure that they come from the same region.

i hear they call mantis shrimp "thumb splitters" - - - - i have seen pics of the mantis shrimp where they look other worldly!!!

I have four pistols amongst my three tanks. Their snapping barely deters snails at point blank range. Now, non-shelled creatures are different, of course. But if a snail doesn't retract from a point blank shot, I have a hard time believing their snap could break anything other then a paper thin piece of glass.

Mantis shrimp can, but RARELY. Very rarely.

Aquatic urban myths 101.

after that movie im left wondering if you can have a cleaner and a pistol in the same tank?

It's species dependent. That video is of a Caribbean pistol shrimp that is a known hunter. They'll eat fish too.

It's not the kind you'd be looking to put in your tank to go with a goby or anything.
