Pistol Shrimp

Got my Candy Stripe Pistol Shrimp Alpheus yaldwyni today. He's acclimating now. Makes a TON of noise for a little guy but he's awfully cute! Probably will never see him again once he's in the tank but I'll sure hear him.

Ain't that the way it goes.. You put a lovely expensive shrimp in yur tank and that is the last you see of it lol

:wavehand: The tank is in the family room. Saw him for about a minute when I put him in the tank. He scouted so fast I'm not even sure where to begin to look.

I have multiple pistol shrimp that hitched in from some Florida LR. I only know there is more than one based on the noise from different parts of the tank and seeing a head in one spot and a tail in another at the same time.

In the almost year I've had them, I've only seen one of them from head to toe.

I got this one mail order and am not real happy with the size. I bet its only about the size of a piece of rice. I thought it would be more like a peppermint. Oh well, live and learn. Just didn't have the time to make a trip to Rochester this week.

mine was fairily small too.....kinda funny when i was acclimating them together because the goby was HUGE

I ended up with an orange spot goby Amblyeleotris guttata and a dragon goby, Amblygobius phalaena, but only the one candy striped pistol shrimp. I had also ordered a Tiger Pistol Shrimp, Alpheus bellulus, but that wasn't shipped.

I'm really glad I got the dragon goby. He is really cool. He sucks up the sand and sifts it through his gills. He also has some very cool patterns.

The orange spot goby is pretty much just sitting in mone spot and not doing much.

i'll have to show you a pic of the "little" mountain my goby put together...the little jerk is taking sand from all over and re-enforcing his new home.

The orange spotted goby hasn't been a problem. He pretty much just hops around the tank. The dragon goby, while very cool to watch, has become a royal PITA! He sifts the sand but always makes sure he right above my clam to dump it on it. I'm going to try moving the clam tonight and see if that helps.

here's his mound. just keeps getting bigger by the day, literally
don't mind the ugliness on the sand....just upgraded the lights and i have a little outbreak going on.

Back in the early 80's, I had a 40 long reef FOWLR set up. We had a hollywood style bed without a headboard so I decided to set tthe 40 long up and have it as my head board. I also had purchased a pistol shrimp and hadn't given it a thought ..until I was laying in bed one night quietly drifting off to sleep, CRAAAAAACK,CRAAAAACK the pistol shrimp decided to pop that claw.
I jumped out of bed it scared me so... I thought the aquarium had cracked and I was about to get nailed with glass and saltwater..needless to say I removed the pistol shrimp after that experience and have never had one since...my wife says she never thought I could move that fast..
Live and learn..

I just seen my Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus bisincisus) for the fist time since last summer. I thought he was dead or killed by my always seen tiger pistol shrimp.
