pistol shrimp

hi guys, i have a few questions for you about my pistol shrimp...

this is a fire red pistol shrimp.... bigger than the normal shrimp, he is approx 2.5" bright red and orange.....

is therea reason why his "snapping" has gotten more frequent?

what is the reason behind the "snapping"? i figure it is a defense?
let me know what you guys think....

Snapping is his attempt to intimidate. Keeps fish away from his food and his home.
