I recently got a micrologix 1000 PLC. I dont know much about them but I can learn the programming. it came with some photoelectric laser sensers. anyone know what all I can do with this puppy?

several people here have used a PLC to automate different aspects of their reef.

Talk to GreshemH, easttn, H20ENG and also search the DIY forum.

Thanks Bean, I was hopeing you would reply as you seem to be up to date on all the different ways to automate a reef

will othe brand name PLC touchscreens work with the AB micrologix 1000 that I have? If so any recomendations and cost breakdowns please. I checked out easttn's thread but he did not provide much of the cost breakdown. I would imagine that the PLC itself would be the most expensive part.

I am not that up to speed with PLC stuff. easttn and GreshemH know the AB stuff. Either will provide you with a cost breakdown and programming tips. I am working on a PC based setup but have put it on hold because I think I may wnt to switch to a PIC based setup.

The DIY stuff is usually more expensive that off the shelf equipment and not a great idea unless you like DIY electronics.

I'll use a GE Fanuc 90 micro as PLC (got it, already did some prog.)

I'll use it to control lights, pump, powerhead, heaters, temp, leds, and could also use it for top off.

I'll used some float switch for flood protection, top off.

Old 90 micro cost less than 40$ on ebay, easy to program.
