Please check intended Tang stock list

My tank is 550g 7' long, 3' wide, and 42" tall with open spaces and not heavily packed with rock. I am still in the cycling stage so no real stock list year however this is my wish list for tangs and I would like to know if it is reasonable.

All tang would be purchased at the same time and around 2-3" in size (as small as I can find them).
(1) Blond Naso Tang
(2) Blue Hippos - if they battle one can live in the 100g frag tank
(1) Purple tang
(1) Chevron Tang
(1) Achilles Tang

and finally (1) Sohal tang --to be added as the last fish in the tank and added at the same 2-3". Other tangs should be at least 4-5" when sohal is added.


Other largish fish may include 1-2 triggers, and possibly some angels (still undecided) all others fish are under 5" @ max size.

Sohals scare me, but in a 550, it is possible. Awesome selection.

As for angel, the emperor is my favorite.

The tang list sounds great, have you considered a yellow tang to give a splash of colour

All good choices. Achilles can be tough, as you probably know, and I'll never keep a Sohal again, just too unpredictable.

I have thought of a yellow tang however I did not want to overpopulate on tangs as I have 7 listed already. I plan on adding a yellow to the large frag tank.

IME, the sohal will cause problems eventually. We have a small one ( 3 inch ) in our 86 x 36 x 36 and he beats on every other tang in there ( Unicorn is 8+ inches ) Also if you blue hippos do fight, the 100g frag tank is only going to be a temp solution. Other than that it looks good.

Yeah it's doable. I kept just about the same tang grouping in a 150 gallon with no problems, and the Sohal grew from a juvi to about 9". That was a great menagerie.

That said, there's no accounting for fish personalities and you can't know what you're going to get. But on the average, it should be fine.

I forget who said it , but describing the Sohal as a 'high strung set of swimming razors' just about perfectly describes my experiences with this fish. Other than a Lionfish, was the only fish I made sure to see where it was in the tank before I put my hand in. Far too many better choices amongst the Tangs IMO.

For a sohal the min i would personally go is 120 x 36 x 24 .. Like i said above we have one ( 3.5 inch ) in a 88 x 36 x 36 and its Not big enough and he is tiny still

I agree. I would not personally put a sohal in an 8' tank. Those guys are beautiful but much to aggressive for my taste.

Probably my favorite group of fish, and I totally get the desire to have multiple Tangs. My 11 year old son asked me the other day if we could get a Naso because 'it's a different body shape'. Just about dropped me falsies (teeth, that is). Doesn't require much prodding though, so a blond Naso now resides in QT to complement a hippo, purple, Desjardini, yellow and Achilles (also in QT). Still would like to add a chevron.

I've been reviewing my choices and I still think its possible... the key is to get all of them except the sohal which will/may be added down the road.

I've had two Sohals, growing them from Juvi's to very large adults and didn't have this experience. They were very good tank-mates, and are really beautiful as large adults. Maybe if you add them after mature it's different IDK.
