I just looked at the Tail Spot Blenny on Live Aquaria - they are little beauties.

What do you think about the lawn mower/algae blenny?

And thanks for the reply! I had no idea that some of the blennies got nasty - they just *seem* like sweet little, docile fish.

skimmer, live rock, mixed rubble substrate...planning rubble zone aquarium(you could look at my thread too)

5-7 Allen's damselfish
1 Striped Fang Blenny
1 male or 1 male/2 female McCosker's Flasher Wrasses
(all eat plankton...could I feed them cyclop-eeze??)

1 Randall's Prawn Goby
1 Orange Tomini Tang

love to look at your thread---can you post the link to it?

I would use the frozen cyclopeeze that comes in the red stick.
For plankton are you using frozen mysis?

the problem with the lawnmower blenny is that you can run out of algae for it

I have a 95 gal tank, with 55 gal sump, Jebo 520 with mag 7 pump, mag 9 return pump, LR and sand bed in sump, Sand bed and LR in tank. These are the fish I want. Let me know what you guys think.

1- sting ray
1- eel
and maybe either 1 lionfish or 1 shark. maybe both. =/

You're about 200g shy of an appropriate tank size for a sting ray, and probably about 500g shy for a shark. "Eel" is really vague, there are some appropriate for that tank size, and many that aren't. Lionfish should be fine.

New 50 gallon with 20 g sump

New 50 gallon with 20 g sump

Ok, so I have a 50 gallon (36x18x19) with a sump/refugium. I have 45 lbs live rock, an NAC6 bubble magus skimmer, and a 6x39 nova ho t5 lighting system. I plan to keep soft and lps corals that are consider "easy to moderate" to keep. I wont be taking on any challenging ones anytime soon, if ever. Anyhow, that said, I'm looking at the potential fish list. Here are the things I like (and side note... I'm really partial to the idea of keeping fish in pairs... it just seems more natural to me).

I will list them in the order of the ones I like the most on top.

2 black and white clowns (just love these guys)

1 yellow watchman goby w/ pistol shrimp (fascinating symbiotic relationship)
OR
1 lawnmower blenny (this is the only fish that I really want that I believe is best kept solo.... in the lfs the ones I've watched have TONS of personality)

2 green clown gobies (so small and akward looking, very amusing to me)

2 carpenter wrasse (any suggestions here on wrasse's would be great, I've read the carpenter flasher wrasse can be kept in pairs/groups if only 1 male)

2 blackcap basslets (haven't found a ton of info on them yet, but they are very neat looking fish and appear to be more-so peaceful from info gathered)

2 firefish gobies (or purple)

3 chromis (i like the small/colorful schooling aspect of these fish)

Just curious as to what you guys think the best combo here would be, and what order to add them? I must add, I do NOT plan to add all of these to my system. I'm merely looking for input on the healthiest combination of above mentioned species, or suggestions on a swap out of one listed that is similar but more beneficial. Any pair I add will go into the tank together/same day.

oh yeah

oh yeah

And for the cleaner crew, I am just going to "feel" this one out, but I'd like to keep the cleaning crew only at a "need to add another one or two" scenario. I dont want to buy a whole "cleaner crew" and watch anything starve or compete too much. =( Besides, I got lucky enough to get a decent cleaning crew that came with my live rock. Collonista snails, and already breeding in my tank. LOL! I do have two emerald crabs already (because I found green bubble algae on my rock), and also want to do 1 fire shrimp/2 cleaner shrimp. So that info may play into my fish list. Thanks everyone.

Will it all fit?

Will it all fit?

here is the link to my thread..

I think it works better to copy and paste..

I was wondering if 1 male flasher wrasse would be better than a harem with 2 females. Would a harem fit in a 55 with the damsels, blenny, tang, and goby already??

I was thinking about mysis, although the books I have read said the fang blenny likes brineshrimp..but maybe I can wean him onto mysis by the time I get him out of quarantine. thanks for the input!

A lionfish will grow large enough to eat the rest of your fish. The long horn cowfish grows to be almost half the length of a 55g (16"+), and when stressed or died will nuke the rest of a tank. They should not be attempted by inexperienced reefers, and should not be kept in small tanks or tanks with other potentially aggressive mates. If you take those two off the list, you have a good list.

Any issue with putting a possum wrasse in a 29 reef (covered)? It'd be with a pair of clown gobies and maybe one blenny.

Possum wrasse are pretty peaceful little fellows, you should be fine. The blenny is the only thing that might harass it, depending on your blenny species.

Don't do firefish or carpenter's wrasse unless you have a COMPLETELY covered tank (i.e. hood or glass). Both will jump through eggcrate. Don't waste your time. I personally don't care for chromis, they are such a generic fish and are so aggressive that it's just not a worthwhile risk imho. I really don't know much about blackcap basselets, not enough to guide you one way or another on them.

So what would be a good "middle to surface" ranging fish to make up for not having the firefish and chromis? I would really like to have a well planned out tank with creatures that habitate the various layers of the tank. And I do actually plan on having a plexiglass cover on my tank top... but if both the carpenters wrasse and firefish are notorious escape artists, I would rather find a healthy substitute, because eventually, I'm sure a lid would get left off, and I dont want increased odds of finding one of my fish dead on the floor...

Also, any odds a lawnmower blenny would leave the yellow watchman/pistol shrimp combo alone if I add him last? I really like both, but have strong doubts that they would co-habitate well. But I do hear the pistol shrimp is a very good "guard dog" to the goby.

A lawnmower would be fine with a ywg/pistol. Blennies tend to like middle to upper tank levels, while the other pair, obviously, stick to the bottom. The shrimp isn't really a "guard dog"; the ywg will flee first, the shrimp will sense the movement and be gone quicker than you can blink.

You could do some sort of dwarf angel (flame, rusty, coral beauty, eibli, etc.) for a middle-tank-roaming fish. Some do nip coral though...

How does this sound for a final list?
