I mix a tspn to a tspn and a half in a gallon jug of new water and just add as needed. I have a doser on back order (for the last month) so I will be going that route once I get it. The way I do it now is not the best way to do things but you can.
I have an RK2 with a pH probe hooked up to the tank so I can watch the pH fluctuate in real time. And it can A LOT so be careful. Start out with a tspn per gallon. Check your Ca, pH , and alk after being in the routine for a while and see how it is. If the routine doesn't keep up with your Ca demand, add another half tspn and so on.
I've mixed up a teaspoon and a half of kalk in a gallon jug and immediately (but slowly) added half of the jug to my tank to top it off. It does cause the pH to skyrocket. I've had it go from 8.23 to 8.51 in a short amount of time and it hasn't affected anything. I have softies, LPS, a BTA and a couple of SPS.
It will slowly fall through the night, and then climb a little the next day. The best time to add it like this is in the morning if you're going to do it.
There is a doser you can make in the DIY section here. If mine doesn't come soon, I will probably go that route too.
