Please help -- catching an evasive mantis

I know there are a ton of these threads, but nothing I've seen suggested is working. I've got a 40 gallon tank with about 80 lbs of TBS LR. First, at best I've only caught a glimpse of what I thought was a mantis shrimp way back in a hole. He clicks away a lot, leaves dead bodies (aka shells) everywhere, etc, but I've never actually seen him out. His location seems to move around, but I can't ever pinpoint his location. Heck, there may still be more than one in there.

I've tried traps, I've tried watching for him at night with a flashlight with a red filter over it (I was told they don't "detect" the light this way...*shrug*), I've tried watching without a flashlight, I've tried luring out with pieces of shrimp, I've tried holding something shiny outside the suspected hole to flush him out, I've tried pulling rocks out of the tank and sitting them out and/or squirting hypo/hypersaline solution in there...nothing.

One of my problems, other than not ever seeing him, is that it's possible the trap MIGHT work, but my two starfish always go into the bottle trap and either pull out the food, or get stuck in there, so that doesn't help or give it time to work, if it even would.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This thing has killed of most of the snails I had in there as well as several hermits, and is the prime suspect for two missing cleaner shrimp. I'd happily give this critter away to anyone who wants it, and if you're in the area, there's a free mantis and a reward in it for you if you come over and get the $#*@ thing out. :)

Any help GREATLY appreciated. I'm a desperate man with a five-year-old who really is impatient with daddy trying to catch the mantis shrimp in his tank.

have you taken the starfish out and placed them in a container long enough to see if the trap works?

your other option would be to get someone to help you and systematically go through the rocks and check for him. a 40 gallon tank with 80 pounds of rock wouldnt take to long.

Which method do you think is the best one for going through all of the rocks and checking for him? In other words, what would be best/safest to flush him out with?

How long would I need to keep the starfish out for the trap to have a chance? Is it one of those thing that it'll work in the 1st hour or it won't work, or does it need to be in there all night?

This may not be what you want to hear, but it took me months to even see mine. I just let it be, until he let himself be seen....kinda stressful though.

Traps can work, but not well...IMO Like I said, I waited, but as soon as I saw him, I took out the rock and got to work. Taking each rock out may not help, because they are excavators and make tunnels through the rocks, and even hollow a burrow (home).

The second one I caught actually covered the entrance to his paths to look like the rock....I noticed some smaller pieces coming off and then noticed the hole behind it. Usually there is an exit too. These animals are extremely smart. I even heard that they can see the red spectrum and into the UV spectrum, unlike other marine animals.

I just took a clean (free of all residue of anything) turkey baster and started squirting fresh water around in the area I saw him with the rock out of the water. (try to watch where he escapes to). Then he shot out into a SW bin I held the rock above while squirting. Knowing where he is definitely helped!

I also had one of those critter keepers (plastic containers) filled with tank water to put him in to recoup for a bit. I actually put the critter keeper in my tank for a few days.

I also poked around with a bamboo skewer to break up any "covers" he may have made to his lair.

i cant help you catch him in any way, except to give you this article which has a few different ways listed, including one that worked for the author. if you catch him, ill pay for you to send him to me in SC. ive been looking for one for a while now. thanks, and hope this helps!!!
