Please help decide on tank

I am trying to find a second tank. I want a bow, hex, corner, or round. I found
a 95 gallon used I am considering. I was planning on a 125ish tank. DO you guys think the extra 25 or so gallons is worth it?

That depends on what you wanted to do with the tank. For an SPS tank i would not see that much of a difference but if is was a fish only tank the standard length of a 125 would allow for more interesting assortment of fish.

im of the school of more gal the better. i always end up wishing after the tank becomes packed with stuff i had just a little more room.

+1 to everything that's been said. I think the most important factor is what do you plan to use the tank for and how willing are you to love your tank (AKA how much maintenance and care are you up for). If you are already knowledgeable about saltwater tanks, please forgive the following, but in case you're not...

Larger volumes are definitely easier to keep your water quality stable in. In my experience, I love this about my 90 g (as opposed to the 24, 30, and 60 that I've had) and I want to go up to a 150+ as soon as it is feasible. It's also true that as a coral addict, I need more real estate.

If you have fish only or fish with a few soft corals, you wouldn't need metal halide lamps. There are a number of different fluorescent lights that could light your tank well. In my opinion, live rock is a must but lighting is not an issue on that score.

For me, aesthetics are very important. That said, sometimes the space you have just looks better with one tank shape vs another. Oh yeah - think about access to the plumbing and working parts. As we are reaching around under the tank to fool with skimmer etc, we wish we had thought a bit more about that when we positioned the tank.

By your screen name, I'm curious if this is a home tank or a showroom tank. There are some local fish stores that offer tank maintenance service. The one I know of is Southwest Aquatics.

Finally, there are a lot of folks on this forum who know waaaaay more than I do, so this is a good place to field questions.

Good luck!

I think the 30 gallons is worth it if you are doing a bow as it will give you 2 extra feet in the main tank as well as under the stand for the use of a larger sump and equipment.

I think you should stay away from the HEX tank but a 90 or larger 1/4 round corner tank would be SWEET !!! :bounce3:

Yeah, I currently have a 55 quarter round and I would love the 144 half round oceanic makes. But it is pricey. The tank I am looking at is a 95 gallon, compact floresents, sump, ect. It is hard to find used corner tanks so I am not sure if I should pass it up. I currently have a small blue hippo and I need a tank that he can use when he grows.

I would go with a standard 125 as you will get the best bang for you buck and they are easy to find. You will have the extra room for your tang and more space for the corals.

I agree, I have been very happy with my 125. Do yourself a favor and use at least a 40 gallon sump. Mines a 30 and I always wish it was bigger. I think we would all be more help if you gave us an idea of your future plans for livestock.

+1

You can fit a 55 gallon sump under a 125 :spin3:

The tang police would not appreciate a hippo in anything smaller than a 6' tank. I would recommend a 180 + :). If you're stuck on 125 or corner or something, definitely 125.

Funny about the tang police. I think I will wait for a bigger tank. I was planning on using my bigger tank as a fowlr and my smaller as a reef tank. I love butterflies and other non reef safe fish and it would really be nice to have a tank big enough to really have a school of fish. Thank you for all the feedback.

Nope still looking. Passed up the 95. Bummed for the short term. I talked him down to 600. Very pretty tank. Piano black base and canopy, acrylic, overflow. I think it is a little to small.

No more highjacking this thread.......I started a poll as I am interested in knowing how many people like glass or acrylic tanks.
