Please ID possible "new shoots?"

I noticed these sprouting yesterday, but tooks it as a bubble pushing a clump of sand to the surface like and underwater miniature sand castle. Today I noticed that the one has what looks like branches extending upward. While moving a snail, I touched it with a wooden stick and it moved, but felt 'rooted'. I should note that both are near the base of two different shaving brush plants that can be seen in the photos.

Thanks to anyone that can id.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but that is indeed the method of reproduction I noticed while keeping this/these algae.

Good luck.

Not necessarily.. new halimeda shoots tend to be more white, as do new frond development in caulerpa and a few other greens. Watch the development, keep taking pics, I think it would be cool to have a small photo diary in this thread of what it looks like. I dont think thats been posted in this forum before. :)

I'll be sure to do that. The two shots were taken last night, so I will take nightly photos and see what develops.

I did do a search and found others that had similar shoots coming up, but no pictures to support it.

They are growing fast, so I'll try to post again this evening.

Here they are...growing a little bigger and the second is starting to turn a little green. It will be interesting to see how fast they actually grow.

The tank is a little dirty; still waiting for its skimmer to come through shipping. Hope the snow doesn't slow it down!!

Very cool! I would have expected the first one to green up by now.. interesting to see what happens. Looks like your second one threw another daughter plantlet! :D

I think I will stick to posting a pic once a week. It might get a little stale looking at a little growth from day to day on just a plant. The twig looking one hasn't changed much, but the other stem(s) is doing well. I should also point out that at the base of the first brush is also Halimeda that has since been covered up by sand. Will it push it's way to the surface?

I did install my ASM G3 tonight!!! Yippie! Finally, my first skimmer.

I'll keep you posted...maybe a pic tomorrow night and then once, maybe twice a week after that.

Sorry, long weekend of many things.

I have since redone a little aquascaping and will probably continues to do so since this is a work in progress. The shoots on the second plant are doing great! They have started to grow out the "leaves" nicely and are forming wonderfully! The first one has gotten buried. It will be interesting to see if it pushes to the surface again.

I'll post pics tonight.

Thanks for noticing.

As you can tell, the depth of sand has increased. The new shoots are doing well on the second, healthier plant. The other shoot was buried so if it pokes through again I will post.

Like I said, work in progress. I am trying to get ready for our 125 and am using this 55 for some experiments in aquascaping and growth rates on a few simple items.

Does anyone know if I get a sand sifting star, or a cucumber, will either eat at the "roots" or plant itself?"

I don't believe so. and I'm almost 100% sure a cuke wont as it has no mouthparts for this (calculous or fiberous matter).

Likewise, sand sifting stars eat works/critters in the sand and I'm not sure how they would begin to attack the roots/plant.

....but, I've been mistaken before :D ..so best to do some reading on the exact types you want to get and make sure of what they 'do' eat.

Best of luck,
John.
