From your picture I'd have to agree with Gary it does look like a sponge. I have them too and when they start growing they don't have a lot of height. Touch it is should be a bit springy. If it is then it is a sponge. Not sure of the specie but if it is the same as I have it grows throughout my rockwork in shaded conditions.

Unfortunately my tank is 42" high and I cannot reach it unless I use an extension grabber to get the rock out to touch it but I don't want to do that since my female Crosshatch sleeps under this rock formation.
If yours is a sponge, does any of your fish eat the stuff? I have a pair of Blueline angels going into this tank next week, maybe they will eat it if it's a sponge.
Can't tell from your pics but does it look like the one in this pic--on the right of the BL? If it's sponge one should be able to see pores on it right?
