please list all possible clam killers

hey everyone,
just got a new clam, just wondering if anyone would be willing to list (or link to pics) of possible bad news snails, etc that would possibly kill a clam.

Humans can be pretty bad news to clams.....

Especially when hungry :)

Sorry could'nt resist that one ;)

Well bristle worms are also trouble for baby clams on sand beds!!!! They love to enter at the bysol and eat away

The worse though are conicle snails, small white point snails that live under the mantle of the clam and eat it...

There are also other small molluscs that burrow into the bysol of clams and eat to there hearts content.... Leaving the clam in the bin afterwards!!!

I have no pictures of the last three, but they are easy to recognise. Just check your clam if you are seeing signs of stress. Luckilly unlike humans these three pests take days to kill a clam rather than in one night so things can be done to remove them.

Cheers

Bristleworms do not kill clams. They are scavengers and will finish off a dying clam. Any type of angel are dangerous to clams some more than others. But if a fish nips at a clam it will cause the clam not to open fully...over time that clam will be very stressed and can die.

thanks!

thanks!

thanks everyone,
i am new to taking care of a clam. i actually just picked one up yesterday and wanted to make sure I knew what to look for. my new clam is about 2", and it opened as soon as i got it in my tank. I was a bit worried about it's mouth being so open, but from what I've read that's ok.

It opens and closes fine, not too fast yet but maybe it's just not used to my tank yet or something.

Genicanthus angels are clam safe. They are planktivores.

Some kinds of starfish (such as chocolate chip and knob stars), cephalopods (like octopus), most crabs (most hitchiker ones that gets big and have big claws, big hermit crabs) and some snails are not reef safe.

First hand experience with Tulip snails (Fasciolaria) and African sea stars (Protoreaster lincki) eating and going after my clams.
