hi fellow reefers
i was thinking of going to a good quality plexiglass aquarium midwest aquariums or american aquariums is this a bad idea or with proper cleaning / maint equiment and caution should i be ok thx

yes i agree... the only glass aquarium that i can find at a reasonable price is sc aquarium steves price includes shipping. the qoute it got from planet aquarium was good but the shipping from texas was $750 dollars thats why i was thinking plxeglass cause it is not as heavy

I've had both a 29g biocube(acrylic) and an 80g starfire. Both are fine, the acrylic doesn't dissipate heat as well as the glass, but otherwise, I think you'll be fine with either [emoji1690]

The downside of an acrylic aquarium is that cleaning coralline algae is very annoying and you are going to scratch it, and it just doesn't have the crystal clear look of low iron glass. The benefits are the incredible durability and the much lower weight. I have a very large tank so for me the weight savings and durability of acrylic was the most important concern, but cleaning the sides is constantly annoying, and if you get a little careless it is very easy to scratch. Granted, it is also fairly easy to remove the scratches, but I'm too lazy for that so I just live with the scratches.

My personal rules of thumb would be if I was setting up a tank <120 gallons I would 100% get a glass tank. 120-250 I'd think about it and >250 I'd go acrylic.

Plexiglass is fine unless u want perfection then go with glass. Ur the only only that could determine ur Risk/Reward ratio. [emoji6]

I've had acrylic tanks since 1989... don't want a glass tank for free! Currently have 7 acrylic tanks from 40g to 5'x6' 500g... a few of the tanks are over 25 yrs old and look like new.

IME, most people that have acrylic tanks started with glass, but will not go back... people that have never had acrylic tanks but have heard "˜bad stories' will say that glass is king!
