Pls help with first fish selection

Hi,

Got a 60g cube 24x24 that's ready for fish. Family wants colorful fish.

Would anyone be kind enough to tell me what a good initial fish list could be? It's an SPS relatively high flow, shallow sand bed, 5 month old, zeovit system.

Thanks in advance.

A basslet of some kind ,,i like the royal grammas,,lots of gobies to choose from..I like the clown goby,,there are firefish too and of course clowns ,,cardinals too..

Blue or purple reef chromis adds some nice color - DD had a pair yesterday
Fairy wrasse
a pair of clowns

You could always go the route of a pair of clowns, its more of a standard now for most tanks it seems. If I were stocking the tank I'd definitely go the route of peaceful wrasses though. My favorites are leopards, but they can be a bit tricky at first.

Ended up with five chromis, two clownfish, a waterman goby and three peppermint shrimp. Let's see how I do with these and then I'll step up and get something more colorful.

Thanks for all your help.

What do you think of a flame angel in the mix?

A FA should be fine; but let your tank age at least 6 months. Small angels really need a lot of mature LR for grazing. I hope you haven't got all of these fish in your tank already. If you have, you've got several potential problems. Are you using a QT?

What do you do if you don't have the ability to run a QT?

I realize the potential problems but no QT option for me now. I may set one up for future additions though.

Thanks for the info on the flame angel. That's good to know.

You can easily find everything you need for a 10-20 gal QT on Craigslist for less than the cost of the Flame Angel you're looking at. If space is a problem, use a closet. If you won't use a QT, I sure wouldn't buy anymore livestock. Many of us, including me, learned this the hard way. A QT isn't just a nice accessory, its as important as as any piece of equipment you have. I don't know a single person (personally, author, or on this forum ) I would take advice from that doesn't always use a QT. I'm sure not trying to beat up on you, but there is no question that you'll regret not using a QT, the only question is when.

Something else you won't like. Chromis used to be friendly and hardy little fish. This is no longer the case. Your five will go after each until there is just one left. Also, Chromis are dying like flies lately, often showing signs of uronema, a deadly and usually fatal parasite. Many retail and wholesale facilities aren't even carry them until someone finds out whats going on.

I really have no room for a QT at the moment. I appreciate and agree with your comments though.

I wanted to get some starter fish to build off of. Chromis were recommended by some above and the LFS. I hope they won't beat each other to death or die from a fatal parasite. If they do, I'll take it as a lesson learned.

Thanks again.

+1

I lost a Kole Tang this week to flukes. Fortunately, he was in QT. If he had been in my DT, all of my livestock would be at risk. Do yourself a favor and QT all new fish.

There is always room for a qt, closet, counter, desk, laundry room, bookshelf, possibilities are endless.

Please let us know how many of the eight fish survive.

Your taking a gamble, which many of us have without a QT. However adding a lot of live stock quickly is even more suicidal.

Pretty soon the family will be asking, why are the fish dead and your wife will be like that tank is the biggest waste of money.

After you've blown through several hundred of dollars in fish you'll re-think the QT. If your not going to QT please please take your time adding livestock.

All,

Very much appreciate the time and the advice.

This is a zeovit tank with a good biological filter, overpowered skimmer and weekly 10% water changes. I've got a close eye on NH4 and will take action on any spike. The zeos take up ammonia so I don't anticipate one.

I realize 8 sounds like a lot but for this system and the small fish size, it should be fine. Probably similar to adding two of the larger fishes.

So far, everyone's eating and no fights.

As for a QT, point taken and I will look at doing this for future additions. One question though. What does everyone use as a biological filter when it isn't set up year around?

Thanks

You just leave some filter material in your sump until you need it. I usually leave filter floss in there in a filter bag and put it in a power filter when i want to use it and toss it after i am done qting the fish.
