Plumbing drain help.

Another Day In Paradise
I got that Sea Clear tank all buffed. I managed to block off some of the built in filtration, so I could drill it. I only had room for 11/4 durso , then reduced to 1 inch for bulkhead. Should I upsize the drain after the bulkhead or just leave it one inch. My return pump is one inch. Thanks, Jim

So do I understand this correct. ... U r only going to have a single drain? Not recommended I hope I am miss understand ing this

1" return off the durso might be noisy and is pretty small. Your going to have to play with the size off the 1" if that the biggest you can get. I have 1 1/2 durso all the way to my sump, dead quiet with a 1" return off a panworld. U sure you can't get a larger bulkhead in?

I only have one return, but I have a dual float (two separate channels) in the overflow to my RKE for fail safe on overflows. If a single durso, you need to make sure that it does not siphon and can be as fail safe as you can get. If for instance, something breaks loose and goes into overflow to plug durso, your going to have overflow. If you can get another failsafe drain to fit in, it would be good, simple to do with a straight shot to the sump.

Yeah there is only room for the one. Also 1/1/4 is the largest durso that would fit.

just "play with it then. In the top of the durso, cap it and put about a 1/4 inch hole in it or cut slices in the pipe at top and use cap to "regulate" the amount of air. You want to make sure it is not syphoning. If you have a reef keeper or apex, use a float to monitor for safety. I personally have never had a durso get clogged, but you know murphy!

BTW, I have used durso's for years with no issues.

Thanks, Yeah Im not worrying about the siphoning, I know how to take care of that. Just wondering if making the drain larger after the bulk head would help the flow and noise also, or if 1 inch is fine.

Go bigger and you can regulate down with either a valve or reducing bushings at the final. Mine is 1 1/2 down to the filter socks and then split into two socks. I had to play with it at the water line in the sump for noise, but I just kept trimming the down pipe until I got the sweet spot :)

You might be able to try 1 1/2" if you put a slip 90 into the T. I match the durso size with the lower pipe and go up a size as it turns down ito the sock. Works for me ans have never gotten a snail in my overflow. Yet.
