"Plumbing My New System - Need Help" - Pics Included

Do a really good job as you glue each joint. Be completely happy with each one, making sure that it looks to be a solid joint. Hold them together 15 to 20 seconds because it will start to quietly flow out of the fitting a bit if you don't. Any glue you see coming out of the joint should be rubbed all the way around the fitting, creating a glue fillet that should look smooth and consistent, not unlike how caulk it applied around the edge of a bathtub area.

Hopefully you'll have no leaks and nothing to redo later.

Marc,
Thanks for the advice on gluing the plumbing. So, I use my finger to create the glue fillet with the excess glue that comes out of the joint? That is good to know.

I decided to purchase the PanWorld 200PS since it is pressure rated. It should cover my gph flow and then some. I am also going to add a "T" line right off the pump incase I want to add a reactor for carbon or phosban in the future. I am also going to run it with the 1" seaswirl device in the frag tank. Thanks again for your advice and help with this one.

I will keep you posted with more pictures once the plumbing is done.

Rebecca,

Looks like a good solution with the pressure rated panworld pump. Initially it looked like you were trying to overcome the distance/head obstacle with volume - which will only work to a point. The pressure rated pump will work much better for this application.

Scott,
Thanks for your input. I think with the PanWorld and the 2" pipe running to and from the pump, I should be more than good on the gph into the frag tank.

Rebecca

Let us know how it does when you finally get it all running. That is when the proof will be fully established.

This is a heck of a project. :)

This is a heck of a project. :)

I know, I sure hope I don't burn out before it is done. No kidding, it is time consuming and mentally taxing...but it will all be worth it in the end when we can sit back and enjoy it everyday. :)

Hey All,
Thought I would update ya on the status. I am in the process of building a Calfo style overflow trough inside my tank running almost the entire length of the tank. It will be installed hopefully, later this week. I will put up a couple of pics once it is in and the plumbing inside the tank is done. BTW, do you all use silicone to glue together pvc pipe and fittings inside the tank orr no glue at all. I was wondering if I need to glue together the pieces that make up my "tee" with the strainers on the ends, that will be my water intakes to my pump. They are low in the tank so I did not think I need to glue them but I want to double check.

Also, were do most people install their moonlights. I want to put mine inside my Luminarc III reflectors but want to be sure that will not be an issue with the Metal Halide bulbs. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Rebecca, I usually don't glue plumbing that stays in the tank that is used for drains, now the pressure side is another story.

As for your moonlights, I would put them between your Luminarc's as the heat from the MH bulbs tend to warm things up quite a bit.

Anything submerged doesn't need gluing. Anything above water needs gluing or teflon tape.

I've seen moonlights pointed up at the reflector, and others mount them pointed down. I wouldn't put it too close to the MH bulb if I were you. Surely the heat can do a number on the plastic housing.

I never thought of mounting the moonlights so they point up at the inside of the reflectors but that certainly sounds like an interesting idea. Did you see how they look when the moonlights bounce off the reflectors? Has anyone else done this?

Thanks.

It avoids spot lighting effects, and creates a gentle glow. I've done it myself with my spider reflectors. I never have officially mounted the moonlights in my setup, because the refugium lighting casts a soft glow into the fishroom and that lights the reef ever so slightly.

Another Plumbing Question

Another Plumbing Question

Hey All,
I just got my PanWorld Pump and it has 1" threaded male input/output ends. I found a 1" female threaded * 2" male slip fitting that I can use to transition to 2" pvc pipe. Is there an issue with pushing or pulling water through the pump going directly from 2" to 1" go into the pump or visa versa coming out of the pump? Or should I do a gradual transition with 1 1/2" reducer bushing in between the 1" and the 2" fittings? Does that question make sense? :p

Thanks.

I don't think it will make a difference on the intake. You are just assuring that it will get penty of water and not starve the pump.

On the output, the only issue may be if that volume of water (2" pipe) is too much weight for it to push upwards. Probably not, but I don't have any personal experience with the Panworld pump.

ROFL

I was about to say... I thought we have been in 2007 for over 4 months now :D

lol. I thought the same thing as well. For a second I thought I stumbled onto one of the many secrets of the universe.

Then I realized I just jump to conclusions too quickly. :)
