plumbing noise!

just set up a 120 and did all of the plumbing, works great except the down draft tube in water noisey, can you insulate it to get rid of the noise or did i do something wrong, has hole drilled side ways and down to allow air to break the syfin.............

If you just set it up, it could just need to slime up a bit and then it should quiet down. Give it a little time (some days) before you opt to change anything.

Is it flushing noise?
Or squealing sucking noise?
Or?

There are many ways an overflow can end up making noise. Each case requires an understanding of the reason the noise is occurring to allow one to know how to reduce the noise.

Just insulating it is normally NEVER the best solution.

In my 120.........

In my 120.........

I have dual overflows with durso pipes. I found that the higher I raised the durso pipes the less the noise created by the overflow. Unfortunately I also found out that if you raise it "above" the "suction break" holes the tank will drain down to your return output!!

My next move is to drill a 'bleed' hole through the overflow wall. This way if the tank drains below the bleed hole then water will pass from inside the overflow into the tank, lowering the level inside the overflow until the syphon bleed hole does its thing...... This way I get no sound but syphon drain protection!

Not sure why this is not sandard???

Ooops and another thing

Ooops and another thing

If the sound is water cascading inside the drain pipes you'll have to reduce the size of the drain pipes to better match you required flow.

washing/flushing sound

washing/flushing sound

and yes it was just set up last weekend,i did install valves on both outputs, should i adjust the flow to make the water back up and even out the in/out flow....................

You should never shut valves on the discharge side of a drain UNLESS you are running a Herbie or BeanAnimal design and the drain is being used as a full siphon drain.

?

?

you mean that its not a good idea to install valves on the overflow to control the outflow................

I think those guys have an "emergency" overflow tube so its OK to have a valve... If I remember right.

Mikid...

I just built an all PVC overflow with a ball valve... it was noisier than all get out. Once I dialed down the flow (about 20% so that only water is being sucked) the thing went totally silent.

As for the fear of flooding... it takes planning. I have the water height in my tank low enough so that if a blockage were to occur in the overflow, the volume of water in the return pump partition of my sump does not exceed the extra space available in the tank and vice versa if the return pump stopped working due to power or hardware failure.
