Plumbing question

I'm setting up my 90 gallon and just installed new bulkheads. I have a question on the drain and return lines.

My sump lines up perfectly underneath the bulkheads. One of the lines could go straight up and down depending on which way I install my sump. Would it be OK for the return line to go straight from the Mag 18 to the bulkhead? It would be about 24 inches straight up. I think I would get some bad water fall noise if I made the drain straight free fall to a filter sock correct?

Last question is a Mag 18 too much for the return pump? Its what I have available to use without purchasing more equipment. My sump is about 30 gallons. Thank

Use 1" pvp for the line going to the sump, will not make that much noise..For the return I use 3/4" flex tubing..

Mag 18....way overkill imo..I use mag 9.5 for my 120 and it is perfect(pumping about 10')from another room(sump room)

But if that is what I had on hand,i'd use it..just pinch it off about half with a ball valve..you dont want all the flow that monster will give..

I have lots of the 3/4" spa flex left from my 180 build. So I do plan on using that. I figured the Mag 18 was overkill but will it hurt anything? I have a valve on the return line to control the flow but really don't want to restrict the pump at all. I'm trying not to purchase more equipment as I need to save for the 300 build down the road.

well you can only pump back as fast as it drains(I'm sure you knew that) but with a 30g sump you will most likely get many bubbles with that pump wide open..Another thing is the size of that mag 18 and the heat it puts out..

Yeah didn't even think about the heat issue. Guess I'll put this pump aside and go pick up a 9.5 Mag. Thank you for the help...

The drain wont be to loud but i do agree a mag is overkill in a bad way. And the small sump with that flow will for sure creat bubbles.

IMO
