I have a mag 5 pump for the return, its confusing about which plumbing parts to go with 1/2 0r 3/4 diameter? Also ball valves with union best place to put them or do I not need them?

on a mag 5 i would go with 1/2" as that is what it calls for. as for the true union ball valve's add one right before the inlet and one right after the outlet of the pump to make it easier to take out and clean.

One comment, the two union ball valve's are a good idea but remember not to turn the flow down or off with the inlet valve or you can damage your pump only close the inlet valve to take the pump out to be cleaned after the pump is off.

Basically you really only need to increase your pipe diam. when you have a few 90's or a bunch of extra fittings etc. Some people suggest 2x the diameter of the pump fittings. I think that is overkill. In my experience I have found that just going up one size right after the pump is plenty.

if you call Danner and ask them. They will tell you that you are suppose to use a 3/4. Using 1/2" causes too much interal pressure and this is what causes mag drives seals to leak. This is not my theory or ideal. This info came right from thier tech support.
