pod producing refugium

I want to keep several leopard wrasses and I have a fuge section in my sump.

So I'm wondering does the Fuge really need chaeto and light or will just live rock rubble pieces be fine for housing and producing pods to be sent to my display?
 
I'm just worried about algae growing in my skimmer and return section. I'll have to add snails, and I don't want them getting stuck in my skimmer or return pumps.
 
You could just raise pods in a separate tank and siphon them out though a screen. A bit more work, but you wouldn't disturb your
main tank.

or another way is to make "pod piles"
piles of small rocks in your main tank, that fish can't get into.
then they can breed safely there
 
Just wondering if you've kept leopard wrasses before? They don't seem to get along very good... They like to move rocks around and don't seem to like anyone else....
 
no I haven't kept one before, but I read a ton of stuff on here about them. Majority of people stated they can be kept together and have multiples in their tanks. Even small tanks.

Does your experience tell you otherwise? I believe liveaquaria even says they do better introduced in 3's, but then again, that's liveaquaria.

I know they are more for the advanced reef keepers, but I've been learning a lot about them and want to be prepared before I buy one. Any info/experience you can share with me would help.

i'll have to be the bubble burster here. with the size of your tank. you'll never be able to keep up with the pods a lepord wrasse will need to eat. he will starve to death unless your lucky enough to get him to eat mysis or brine. I think steve weast only has 1 and he has a 800 gal tank.
 
As long as you train your leopard to feed on prepared foods you should be fine... my mandarin is trained to eat pellets and cyclopeeze granuals... you can do the same with leopards... my leopards died due to 6line abuse...
 
The one I had just terrorized the tank.. He would pick up frag disks and plugs and scatter them around the tank.. Killed a bunch of my micro hermits as well..

Oops I just reread the post.. Sorry about that .. I have actually ahd leopard wrasses and they were pretty mellow.. A friend here in berkeley has one that eats NLS pellets... Pretty big and fat too..

I was thinking of a dragon wrasse or maori.. I've had the two aforementioned and they were crazy... :)
 
Heh, I was wondering. What you were describing didn't sound like leopards to me. Yes I've heard then can wipe out a pod population pretty fast. I do in fact hope to train them to eat other foods. I've read many successful stories on here about them eating pellets and what not. It's a chance I'm willing to take, and I'm willing to put the effort in on getting the fish to not just survive but do well. Won't know till you try. In my opinion they are the best looking wrasses around.

So, back to the fuge, so I need a light? =)
 
This isn't my first tank. I have a 50 gallon with several flourishing fish in it. And before this I had a fowlr like 4 years ago which did well.
 
Leopards are just more delicate fish to deal with... although beautiful fish.. just touchy on the care side..
