Pohnpei clams and disease...

I don't know of any confidentiality issues with disclosing livestock distributors. I can safely say that the Ponape/Pohnpei clams that have been spoken about for the last month from different retailers came from the same distributor including mine.
I completely agree with finding a reputable and knowledgable source for your livestock. It seems to me from reading these responses that most selling these amazing creatures are willing to go to great lengths to ensure their viability.
I think that you have access to some incredible resources on the BB's. This thread and others are proof of that. Adam

Rob from eastcoastclams was the one that had issues disclosing the source of his "diseased" clams. It is a real shame that he won't share this information that may help others avoid problems. Of course if this is his normal wholesaler, he could be shooting himself in the foot by doing so.

OMG, I almost forgot about the thread I started at ReefLands... LOL *Runs to check on it*

Adam, talked with Barry yesterday when I ordered some clams and he related to me that it wasn't so much the importor but the facility that were housing the clams for them and later finding out that a lot of the nicer clams were walking away if you know what I mean. The imported finding out more about this place where they were being kept, he changed locations. Now they are being housed in a new, very reputable major wholesaler in LA. Very nice, state of the art equipment and proper lighting and raceways that are spotless. Barry says that he has personally been to that facility and also picks out the clams that he wants to buy.

I can only pass on what he has told me and if you have any question, he said feel free to call him.

the whole truth and nothing but the truth:D

RonN-
I agree that the new facility is high quality and BIG. This is my wholesaler. I spoke with Barry last week at length.
My point is that you now have access to quality Ponape/Pohnpei
clams sold by reputable sponsors of the BB's. I agree that knowing the source and conditions of your livestock is essential.
I think that threads such as these are key exposing fact & myth. Adam

I couldn't agree more that buying from a reputable source is very important. You should always know where your livestock is coming from.

I am just glad we have a forum like this to find out what vendors are reputable or not as well as debunking blind assumptions. There are just so many people that spread around misinformation that needs to be corrected or researched. Forums like this help the hobby so much.

Project,
I bought a clam from Jeff eight weeks ago and it is doing fine. You should talk to him about what he did to his tanks and his views on the subject. He seems to think that the disease is behind him. I have to agree and I will gladly snatch up any more of those Truk lagoon clams he gets as well as any good Ponaphei clams he gets. Your relentless postings on this subject have created a price decrease on these clams and those willing to take the risk right now are enjoying the value.

You're welcome. :)

I will be purchasing a Ponephei Ultra Maxima from Jeff's Exotic as a "Test" clam. Jeff is giving me a great price on one for this 'expirement'. I'll update you all on how it goes.

So............ How did it go? Or, how is it going? Id love to know. Barry (clamsdirect.com) has some AMAZING ponepei's in. I dont think I want to risk it though.

Heres a question for whomever can answer- After a diseased clam is in a tank and subsequently dies, does the disease remain in the tank (like ich), or can another farm raised clam be introduced later down the road (1 plus months), and be unneffected?

John

6 days later, my gold maxima looks just fine. :D No signs of any stress. I'm very happy as I'll probably go visit Jeff's again this weekend unless Victor at R. Collection can get in a shipment of Maximas in before I get to Jeff's. PR, you know Victor right?, how are the selection and prices there on clams? I know he has killer prices on fishes. I really want a 3" light-aqua color ultra one for my tank.

If you get the clam disease, you will know it very quickly. I personally waited 3 months last time. No one really knows what is the "safe" time frame to place more clams back into the tank. Most people I know used 3 months, and they starting to get their clam population back into the swing of things. Good luck.

Jim:D

I didn't get the clam yet. I might actually hold off on doing that because of something that recently happened.

Anyhow, approximately 2-3 weeks after all infected clams were removed and a 'healthy' farm raised maxima was added, the new 'healthy' clam was in perfect health.

I know many say to wait 3-5 months before the addition of new clams, but IME this was not necessary. Although I would recommend waiting a couple months just to be on the safe side.

I have had no loss of Ponape clams nor have any of my customers to date... now ~6 weeks.

My Pohnpei arrived today, and is in the water, it looks great! Barry, at ClamsDirect did an excellent job w/ packing and shipping...I will keep you all updated.

CLAMS

CLAMS

JUST SO EVERYBODY KNOWS FOR THEIR OWN INFORMATION, ALL OF THESE CLAMS THAT EVERYBODY IS TALKING ABOUT COME FROM THE SAME IMPORTER THAT HAS EXCLUSIVE COLLECTION RIGHTS IN THESE AREAS. SO TO SUM IT UP, EVERYBODY THAT WHOLESALES THESE CLAMS RECIEVE THEM FROM THE SAME SOURCE. SO AS FAR AS QUALITY OF THE SPECIMAN AND OVER ALL CONDITION OF THE CLAM, I THINK A MAJORITY OF IT HAS TO DO WITH HOW THEY WERE COLLECTED AND HANDLED BETWEEN THE OCEAN AND THE TIME THEY GET TO THE DISTRIBUTOR OR WHOLESALER. IT REALLY SUCKS ABOUT THE WHOLE DISEASE AND MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF DEATH THAT EVERYBODY HAS EXPERIENCED, BUT AS FAR I KNOW, ALL THAT IS OVER AND DONE WITH. SO I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT ANYBODY WHO WENT THROUGH THE DISEASE PERIOD AND LOST THEIR CLAMS SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE CURRENT STOCK THAT IS AVAILABLE.
GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY

After buying all these clams in the past 7 months, Pohnepei and farmed I have lost one. No effect on others at all. Can't indenify why I lost that one other than it started to close on day and next day had pulled his mantle back inside his shell. That was 3 weeks ago.

Barry at www.clamsdirect.com told me in the past, when a clam looks bad, don't leave it in the display tank, guarantine but don't let it die in the main tank as it can pulute the tank. Make sense to me.
