Poidog's 70g Tech Tank Build

wait. Why do I need an extra 1/4" on my 1" barb. Shouldn't I get a 1" ID tubing? Do I need an extra 1/4" on my 3/4" barb?

You want 1"ID for your 1"OD barb. The purpose of the barb is for the barbs to seal and hold the tubing. Also, PM sent.

i just got a used 57 rimless tank with stand, it is in the slow progress with no water, lol..... it has the same footprint as yours, but the tank is 3inches lower.

the stand is terribile with water damaged inside, i have also add 2x4 @4 to support it.

i also wanna have a waterproof spray the inside, but i dunno should i apply the water based or the oil based. i m worrying the spray is not good enough, so i simply lay a plastic sheet inside it.

I'm biting the bullet and buying the giesemann today from PA. It could take up to 6 weeks... they're checking with their distribute and finding out what the current lead time is as they don't stock it.

What t5 bulbs should I get? there are 4x24w

Wasn't this Carrie's tank? Doesn't she still have the Sunpod? As I recall, she was able to maintain a beautiful SPS dominated tank with that. If I were you, I would get something used and wait for LED prices to drop. We will all be doing LED, it's just a question of when. I wouldn't drop that kind of cash on lights right now...

Poidog,

That is a really nice fixture, and I am sure you would have success with it. The T5 bulbs would depend on the color temp of your halide, but I would recommend ATI bulbs.

However, I do agree with the other poster and if you are going to spend $900 on a fixture and are willing to wait that long, there might be other options just as good if not better. One thing I noticed on the model you picked out is that the halide is not centered:

Not sure if this bothers you or not.

Now I don't know a whole lot about LEDs, but for the money you are spending you can almost get 2 AI units or two of the new Maxpect Mazarras that are coming out soon. But here's my recommendation if you want a really nice state of the art fixture where you can run anything and save some money - the 36" Sunpower 6 bulb dimmable w/ built-in controller:

I know for a fact that this is the perfect T5 fixture for Tech setups, as I have a 48" 6 bulb on my Tech 90. The reflectors end right where the Tech eurobrace is, so there is no need to go with the more expensive Power Module. Also, the 6 bulb Sunpower is the perfect front to back width to cover our 18" wide Tech tanks and clear the Eurobrace. With ATI bulbs, it is so powerful that I have to hide my Acans and LPS on the sandbed, with the fixture 6" off the water. Plus you will save a few hundred bucks and have possibly as good if not better results.

Just my 2 cents ;)

Thanks for the lighting suggestions, but I've been around the block and back on this topic (see my other thread regarding the lighting). I've made my decision on the Giesemann. I made the decision on still wanting the look/shimmer of MH, the design of the fixture, the 0 noise it makes (no fans, only the ballast noise), t5 supplements, premium ballast, and high quality of the fixture. I don't like the look of just t5s, and LEDs aren't just there yet to spend the same kind of money on.

The MH in the Giesemann is movable within that solid aluminum panel, so you can have it centered or off centered. The price is inclusive of choice of Giesemann bulbs, so that's $100 there (or you can order without the bulbs and buy your own with the savings).

Yes, this was Carrie's tank, I said that in the first post.

I'm going to level, reinforce, and plumb it this weekend if I can get all the supplies I need left locally. Will post a photo update.

Wasn't able to get all the plumbing done as I couldn't find everything locally, so I had to order the remaining... should have it all done this week now. I was able to touch up paint the stand, level the tank, and split the outlet that will be used on a less of a load circuit.

This week will be finish the plumbing and leak test with FW.

I'm just going to bite the bullet and order all of the equipment need this week, instead of piece meal it together. I figure by the time it's all hear, and cycled we're looking at beginning of Sept/Oct at the earliest.

Other things I have decided on:
100 lbs of BSR Fiji dry rock
25 lbs of Real Reef cured live rock from DD (to seed dry rock)
60 lbs of Tropic Eden Reef Flakes (substrate)
20 lbs of Tropic Eden Live reef ruble (to seed the reef flakes and for sump)

I am taking this route to try to eliminate any possible way of introducing pests/nuisance algae into the system. My current nano has aptaisia (that isn't a problem, but it's a pain to kill them with kalk when needed), and has a recent bought of byropsis (that my turbos used to mow down, but now they have no interest) so I'm going to tech-m it to death.

Come on UPS! I have 6 packages, total weight of ~200lbs of equipment/supplies for the new tank coming in today! I hope the delivery guy stays hydrated so he doesn't pass out from this heat before he can make it to my house!

I got the return plumbed last night, still waiting on the valve to be delivered to plumb the overflow drain. After that, then I'll leak test with some hose water, drain, and fill with salt/sand/rock and begin the cycle.

Will be ordering 100 lbs of dry Fiji rock from BRS. Anyone recommend also seeding with the bottled bacteria stuff, since I'm starting off with dead rock and a small amount of live sand?

Anyone have, or know where I can get one or two pieces of nice, cured, pest/nuisance algae free live rock? I would use one from my existing tank, but I have some aptasia, colonial hydroids, and vermetid snails that I don't want to transfer over to the new tank. Not that hey have been any big problem, but I'd rather not even start with them.

Here are some of the "big" goodies that came in today

Tropic Eden live sand and Reef Flakes. One of of the live sand containers busted open during shipment. I'll be contacting PA for a replacement tomorrow. There is also a macro shot of the Reef Flakes to show their size. I would have liked to see the Mini-Reef Flakes too (as they are 2mm, regular is 3.5mm), but these will do nicely.

Here is the Reef Octopus XP-1000SSS and the Vortech MP40 that will compainion my MP10 on this tank. The skimmer just barely fit in my sump. Its tight getting the bigger base through the space where it fits, but once it's in it doesn't touch anything but the bottom.

4 more boxes tomorrow of other supplies and 100 lbs of BSR Fiji dry rock.

Sounds good, wait until you come over on Sunday and see the wonderful Diatom bloom you can expect from that BRS dry rock!

Thanks. I forgot to add that the Giesemann is in stock at the distributer that is located in Canada. It should take about 2 weeks to be drop shipped to me. My bulb selection is
