Poidog's 70g Tech Tank Build

I'm just not too keen on that rock BRS sent you..... It just looks like 100 pounds of boulders.... No interesting shapes, crevices, flat pieces, etc. IMO.

I've always use Marco Rock for my dry rock and tell them that I want a really nice assortment of shapes to do overhangs and caves and they have never steered me wrong....

Hopefully BRS can do something to help you out....

I agree, looks like a wall of rock and you wouldn't get good flow around and through it. I have a small sledge that would work wonders if you want to borrow it :)

The big pieces should break into natural looking pieces. You could even use a chisel if you want to be more precise.

Well I had to call BRS, they did not get back via email. They will let me return the rock less the cost of shipping to send it back. Not really fair in my eyes because they sent me crap pieces. So I one of two options:
1) order 50 lbs more of Fiji, but be more specific at what they send me, use that + what I have and send 50 lbs back (about $30 in return costs)
2) Send all 100 lbs of Fiji back (about $55 in return costs) and go with 100 lbs of the "reef saver" eco rock

They are out of Pukani except for large pieces.

I would look at it like this.

I am sure you plan to have the tank up for a long time.

If there is something you do not like about it, you will always notice it and it will take away from you enjoyment.

$30 - $50 is less than the cost of a nice meal out.

For that price I would do it right the first time.

Just my 2 cents.

I completely agree. So, I'm going to send all this stuff back then and get the "reef saver" eco rock - the stuff mined, but from the ocean.

i got my 55lbs BRS "reef saver" eco rock on 7/7, i requested the rock size from 5-8 inches, they came 1/4 rocks that bigger than 12inches.

my tank is 36x18x21, i feel 55lbs is too much for me, i will take my time to play around them, good luck.

That rock looks a TON better than the stuff poidog81 got shipped (sorry I dont know your real name... lol).... Definitely go with that !!!!

Ya that rock is so much nicer than what I got. I'm still in negotiating with BRS regarding shipping and returning and replacement. So far their customer service is lacking.

AYCkorea - what size tank did you use that rock for?

those rocks will be put in my 57g Oceanic rimless 36x18x21, i think i will break some of the large pieces

I would consider getting their large Pukani rock if that is all they have. Breaking large rock isnt that bad.

The more I look at the current rock work, the more I'm starting to like it. I think it needs some tweaks with some smaller rock pieces to help create some coves and a bit more depth. But it does look a ton better in person than in the pics. And there are a ton of placements for SPS. So I'm thinking of just ordering an additional 50 lbs of Fiji in smaller sizes to use and then send back the heavier, more boulder type, rocks I received (about 50 lbs, so I'll just be out $25 in returning 1 - 50 lbs box).

Thoughts? Anyone around me that can stop by and take a look in person?

Well I finally got someone at BRS that could help me - Reid.

I ordered 70 lbs of additional Fiji rock, that he is going to hand select. He apologized that I got "boulders." I can then send back whatever I don't use for a refund, I'm just out the return shipping that will be $25-$50 depending on how much I ship back.

Will keep you posted on how the new rock is when it gets here.

You can ship it to them in a Large USPS flat rate box....if you are willing to risk it getting there...for $15. Up to 70lbs.

UPS has "lost" my replacement rock due to weather conditions? Are you serious? It wasn't raining that hard! Who wants to make a bet when they do find them they'll be soaked and the boxes will be falling part. Thank goodness BRS packs the rock in plastic.

UPS sucks.

Glad you're getting some better rock, the first batch looked like softballs with some holes.

I know you're already invested in this but dry rock (any brand) tends to be a huge algae magnet. I've read tons of posts from people that have problems getting it in control.

Nerite and Cerith snails will take care of cyano and algae until the rock grows enough good bacteria and coralline.
