AllenFord,

AllenFord,

you must be in my husband's cheering section, sounds like him, well if you're gonna do that you should just get a bigger one!! I have seen Steve's aquarium looking around, it is absolutely amazing. I think whatever he feels comfortable building a support for is the one we will go with. I know that he is always on the conservative side of things, we have had our share of floods, etc in the beginning so whenever he changes anything he is on side of caution. So it will be interesting to see how high he goes if I tell him he can do whatever he wants. Well, within reason, of course.

I think he should make one continuous tank spanning 3 walls. It would be like a walk-in closet, only better. That's my dream tank. Good thing I have a sugar-momma

this is my "dream tank"

its the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Kelp Tank display. i just watched a show about it last night. until i get it, all my other tanks will be just practice :D

so he came home to his dream Deltec skimmer as a "thanks for what you do".

You do indeed deserve diamonds! :D

A 110 is a little small for a "lifetime" dream tank. Things get interesting in the 200-300 gal range.

And anyway, like a puppy grows into it's paws, his new tank will need to grow into that skimmer! :D

The reefing experience is a learning process.
As I have moved up to larger and larger tanks my knowledge has increased.
Many things in this hobby cannot be learned simply by opening a book.
You need to try things out yourself. You need to experiment through trial and error.

Its very hard to have a "Dream Tank".
Within a month of having that new tank you want something bigger.
At first the new tank will look huge compared to your old one.
As time goes on you will grow accustomed to the size.
I went from a a 29gl to a 55gl to 120gl and now a 225gl.
I now think the 225gl is not that big.
I am 24 now and if I live long enough I may have a 10,000gl reef.

I am already planning a new tank that is 5 years away.

Tanks are no different than anything else in life.
People always want, bigger, faster and better things.
Just look at the divorce rate!!!:D

Lawgirl, while I see your point about using a bunch of years on education before upgrading too fast, I must say I think I am in your husband's cheering section as well (and this is a woman's perspective). Don't you have an obsession that it is hard to put a ceiling cap to? Hell, when I started out, I thought a 75 gallon tank was HUGE, now it seems so limiting. I personally would rather a guy be interested in something like this (would share my interest in living things) than cars, which can be even more expensive, and only add to the beauty of the garage, not to the house in general.

Justifying my reefkeeping expenses to my boyfriend seems like a constant conflict (partly, since he is a cheapskate), but as we haven't tied the knot just yet, it's still my money to spend... hopefully it won't be an issue down the road...

BTW, this poll I think is going to be HIGHLY biased. ;)
This is like asking people in a Steeler's fan forum who they'd like to win the Superbowl this year.

Of course, I knew this would be a bit biased, asking a group of reef obsessed individuals if a 110 is enough?? Yeah, I even know the answer to that one, but like I said above, I was giving hubby a hard time, told him I would post a poll on his favorite "reef site"

He is on this website constantly, I read over his shoulder all the time, so I thought it would be fun just to rib him and let him read the responses.

And I do give him goodies for his tank (although it's an expensive one for sure) Yes, I have hobbies too, but it's funny, I can go to my crafting store and get a ton of items and walk out with a 30.00 total, so it's a little shocking to see some of the price tags.

But we don't have kids and we only live once right?? I just like giving him a hard time, that way I get to pick a lot of the items, decor, etc. You know the game right?? But yes, he's a good man,

I definitely don't know about the UNLIMITED category, but I think this one will give him at least a year or two just to plan and to put together, with the destruction of the wall, etc, and the new tank, and all the things that go with, and yes, he has a lot of nice items that will go with a much bigger tank like his Deltec skimmer, chiller, kalk, calcium reactor,

And one more thing on his side, he (we) are breeding black perc clowns and of course cardinals too. But we have somewhere around 300-400 baby black clowns currently maturing in his huge breeding set up in the garage. So he will bring in a bit of petty cash for his new tank!!

I am actually looking forward to starting his new thread "Constructing my second last lifetime tank". Lots of plans, pics, and I am sure funny stories

Its impossible to make a dream tank your first time around. There is always something to improve and there are always mistakes made your first time around.

Im on my thrid tank. Third times the charm! In all honesty, my brain is already concocting a 4th tank for once I move into a new home. This tank will be my 'dream tank/perfect tank'.

happy reefin'

Lawgirl, hah and yeah I know you are just ribbing him, and you know it's not all serious here. I think it is cute that you come online to make your point, and that you guys have an open relationship where you can discuss things like that. I know quite a few spouses that go around hiding huge expenses, that goes both ways for men and women... but inevitably here, there's usually some wife-bashing post about how "women ruin everything, yet if the tables were turned and it was a diamond...blah blah blah". Inevitable I guess in a hobby that is like 95% male based. But I think the theme of balancing finances and trust is universal.

I am proud to say that I believe in full disclosure. :D That way I don't have to remember anything. And with my simple mind, that's a good thing.

My wife has been really nice to me when it comes to tank expenses, purchases, upgrades, etc. It probably keeps me out of trouble as well. Hence, I have no problem in the least when it comes to buying her a diamond, jewelry, etc.

LawGirl, I would also like to say I found this thread to be quite hilarious when I happened upon it last night. :)
