Polyps Galore, 70+ Colony Zoa tank

vitamin

vitamin

Not only what, but when is the real question.

The zoas are fed a special blend of food (Well actually the whole tank is fed this stuff)

1 Whole Jar of this stuff

Also added into the mix was:
2 lbs Muscles
2 lbs Manilla Clams
15 Giant Shrimp
7 Large Oysters
4 Minced Carrots
1 Half Head Broccoli
1 Bottle Selcon
1 Bottle SeaChem Amino acid supplement
2 Bottles of Coral food soak
1 Half Bottle Reefroids
1 Half Bottle freeze dried phyto

Now here is the special part, I have no reaction at all with this food for a feeding response during the day. At night time it's a whole different story, unless you have moon lights they will stay shut so those are also important.

At around 1-2am I turn the return pump off, dial back the close loop and broadcast feed the whole tank. Let it sit until I wake up @ around 8:00am and then turn everything back on. I get a slight temp drop but nothing to large and then keep only the actinics on for the rest of the day.

The zoa tank is 65g it has only been running for about 2 months but I have owned most of the zoas before that point.

Thank you! Your kind words are like daggers to my Visa card, only makes me go out and buy more haha.

First thanks all of you
I know all about the additives which is on the market
The challenge is to do it myself. Most of the materials are available for me. The question is how to mix them, in the fish food which I prepare, or in some liquid solution?

Pending spousal approval grab the blender and dice to the finest.

Great read, Following this one!

gj on all of that hard work!
those colors must be unreal in person - great payoff :)

hows that nothing doing? ;p

Some actinic shots:

New Skimmer, say good bye Hydor Helllllooooo ATI BM 250!

I think a little film algae with worth the full spectrum blast the coral tanks get daily, makes for some wicked photos also:

Ok so after reading this thread I have tried your method to see if I can get a system as gorgious as yours. before I didn't have moonlights just Actinic LEDs that stayed on till 10Pm now I added lunar LEDs that come on when the actinics go off. I have a Solana 34 mixed reef and a 10 gal zoe tank hooked in with the 34. So I waited till lights out dialed down the flow and fed a mix as close as I could get to your but of course with some variance and not near the volume b/c its a smaller system. the reactions were minimal only some of the zoes put out a film and most closed up after the lights went out. I guess my question is how long till they get used to the new method (was feeding at day time before) and could their reaction also be due to not ever having moon lights as well? Also in such a small system I worry about temp change so I didn't isolate from the sump I just dialed down the flow could this also be a problem, we have had some cold nights lately hear in florida. perhaps more time will tell I will update accordingly. Thanks in advance your tank looks great.

The number of colonies you have is amazing. Great stuff!

Thanks!

Oh believe me they are much better in person.

And nothing died :\.

absolutely stunning. i had a ton of frags that i was trading and growing to make what you have. i kept a few and sold the rest off to breed clowns..now seeing this thread makes me regret my decision! damn this is sweet.

I'm trying to breed my Onyx miss bar female with a regular male right now with no luck :(, any pointers? You could always start up a little 10g dedicated zoa tank, cheap and you can see them much better.

hi im new to the site ur tank is god of zoanthids. its crazy looks beautiful , can u post a pic top down again. thank u

Haha, thank you! I'm sure i can wrestle something up right away here.

Your zoa tank is amazing! If you ever feel the need to give some away.... well you know ill accept them
I'm down for giving away free frags every so often, good to have back up colonies in other peoples tanks. These things can be finicky some times.

gp2 Amazing!! I love palys and zoos. Hopefully my tank will look like this one day
Just takes a little time but the best part is watching them grow, my tank is already full, upgrade time haha.

mrmikeasaurus all i can say is....WWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW
that is awesome...
Scopus Tang Absolutely stunning . . . thank you for sharing!
gp2 really awesome set up!!! I am turning my 65 into a zoa/paly setup. Thanks for the inspiration!
format The number of colonies you have is amazing. Great stuff!
Glad your all enjoying it at least my addiction is making everyone happy :D.
That is a fantastic picture.
I was trying to capture the silhouette of the acros against the glass and The Red Baron just decided be his usual attention loving self. Agreed, wicked photo .

That's Calgary , I would much rather be laying on a beach in Florida right now (How are those pristine white beaches for you anyways?).

If your going to keep the main tank circulating with the sump just make sure your filter sock and skimmer are taken off for the night. The solona makes for a perfect zoa tank, just take it slow like your doing. Everything takes time to get accustom to the new regime (especially your bacteria cycle, to much to fast can crash a tank). You should find over a couple months that the zoas are more receptive to feeding at night time, just make sure you either have the lights on every night or on a lunar cycle (Uniformity and consistency are majorly important here).

How did you get your Actinic shot with your camera like that?
Dark room (Taken at night) with 4 actinic + 39W T5's + 2 50W lunar strips and the underwater case.

What was your camera Settings I mean?

The camera has an underwater setting which allows me to change my Red/Blue balance, this is with it cranked all the way to the red (Which tones down the blue a bit surprisingly. Not 100% sure of all the settings, 1/8 shutter, 4:3 5Mb, its a wicked point and shoot.
