Polys open one day and close the next day?

Hello Everyone,

The parameters of my tank are pretty stable as far as Alk, Cal, Mag, Salinity go. I test them every week and keep all the records of them. What confuse me the most are the polys of my Sps. Some days, the polys of my RedPlanet extend alot and come out very nicely. Sway back and forths with the current. But the next day they all would closed up and withdrawed into the sps skeleton. Then the day after that they would all come out again beautifully. I had the corals for about 5 months now, grow and encrust nicely. The tank has been set up for years.

Is that normal for everyone or it is just happening in my tank?
Do all of your sps fully extend their polys everyday or they open some days and closed other days?

Thanks,
Bao

For me some corals do it more than others. But your not alone.

My deep water did this last week, the polyps were deep inside. Looked at It today and It had considerable growth.

My cali tort has had excellent polyp extension from day one, never went away!
M Formosa hasn't been having polyp extension for weeks, who knows! Lol but I they look healthy I think you will b alright.

thanks for the reply.
This morning while feeding my fishes, I saw all the sps are very happy and their long extended polys waving back and forth with current. This put a big smile on my face. But I know that the next day, one or two sps will close up and not looking good.

Kind of frustrating not knowing if that is normal or just happen in my tank because of something bad.

Anyone else observe this behavior in your tank?

very normal. These things have minds of their owns. some days they open and some they don't. like people's moodiness

+1 for me. It's frustrating to see them nice and extended at the LFS. Get home and it's on and off every other day. I also keep my tank parameters stable and trying to figure out what causes this. I figured it may be my ATO dosing too much Kalkwasser during the topoff. I actually added a bypass valve to mix and dilute the kalk with plain RO/DI incase it's too potent and causing issues. My Milli though is insane and has awesome PE. My tort is growing really nicely and encrusting nicely. My issue is with the sunset Monti and also some LPS. I have also figured out that if I skim 24/7 then the LPS tend to deflate. If I run it 5h on and 3h off then the LPS are much happier, but I also get diatoms on my sandbed.

No, I don't have any fishes that would pick at them.. I think I give up on trying to understand them.. I am just trying my best to keep Alk, Cal, Salinity, Mag and other parameters stable and let them do whatever that they want to do.
