Pom Pom Crab Question

My pom pom crab has lost his anemone.
What do I do? Will he find another one?
Will he be able to feed without it?

p.s. is this right forum?

Thanks!

Nothing to worry about & this is the right forum.

They pick up their food with another set of legs & don't need the aneomes to feed. The anemones are used for defense although some people have reported crabs will steal debris from the anemones. A researcher at the University of Hawaii observed that if a crab lost one anemone it would tear the remaining anemone into 2 pieces; the two pieces then regenerated & formed 2 complete anemones.

I misunderstood - I thought he was down to just one. In the wild each species of boxer is thought to use just one species of anemone. I haven't seen any reports that the crabs will accept other species in an aquarium. They don't need the anemones for survival or feeding but they're not as cute without them. :)

It's possible you'll find him holding one sometime in the future. Mine seem to come and go to some extent. I had one carry around a green majano anemone for awhile, but now he's back to the standard little white ones.

If you get another crab, don't be suprised if they do share. My crabs share. Although it might be more like one 'stealing' rather than them 'sharing'.

I purchased one with no pom poms. Then I bought another one with 2 pom poms. With in two days...they both had two. Good luck

Great info guys. It's good to know that they will pick up other anemones in your tanks if they have to.

If you do get another one try to match their size. Some one posted a while ago about how one of his two pom pom crabs kept attacking the other & ripped its legs off.

Thanks for the info Leslie. My pom poms are about the same size....they were just hanging out together on the same rock. I have also read that post...in the end I think it turned out ok....minus the abuse in between!

You could be referring to a thead that I started here. I am happy to report that my boxers do not appear to be fighting any more. They both have 2 pom-poms and appear healthy :) I think it took the little pom-pom crab a few molts to catch up to the big guy. Now that they're the same size, they seem to be friends.

Zepplock,

Yeah, I bet it will. It does look pretty small in the pic, but I see no reason why it wouldn't grow. Bear in mind that I am far from an expert, I can only go off of my own observations in my tank :)
