pom pom crabs

maybe my favorite crab, i've had a few down the line. pom pom crabs are probably the most reef safe crab you can get, they usually just stay in one spot so spot feeding helps,
they also benefit from phytoplankton and zooplankton which they can filter it out with those comb like appendages.

Mine came in on a rock as a hitchhiker......I know, lucky me. You can imagine what I said when I first noticed him. "What the Hell" or something along those lines. I've had him for about two years now. He hides most of the time but cool addition none the less. Bothers nothing from what I've noticed. Just wish I saw him more often.

Bringing the thread back....from the search...

I would imagine that these crabs are nocturnal for the most part, but my hermits are moving nonstop day and night. I am considering a pom pom crab, but if they never come out in the daytime, I won't much enjoy it anyway.

I have fish such as one red coris wrasse, a couple clowns, one damsel (not aggressive at all), and a blue hippo tang....will they bother a pom pom? The other fish I have are things like gobies that I am pretty sure won't bother much of anything.

How big do these crabs get? And arnt their "pom poms" anemones?

From what I have read, they don't get but 2-3 inches. And yes, they are anemones, but they don't require any specific care. The crab takes care of them by feeding them, and they have no specific lighting requirements.

Also, if they lose one anemone, the crab will split one in two (just like fragging it) and then they both will grow larger.

A few club members are going to buy some things soon (see another thread), and I might just get one of these crabs. If it does well with my other inhabitants, I may get another one later on.

my pom pom is a rare sight to see, but is awesome. when she is out, she is hilarious. waving her arms in the flow. only around at night.

I've considered these, but I heard that the only REALLY reef safers are porcelain crabs.

I might pick up one of each just for the heck of it, 100g tank.

I have also wondered about these. My fiance LOVES crabs of all variety (she is from maryland near the water). I have shyed away from these just because most people recommend them for nano's because of their size. I have a 90g.

Many people say they are VERY reef safe crabs. If you think about how they eat, how would they grab your corals with their claws? They have their 'hands' full already. I've read some reports or descriptions at retailer websites about them maybe not being reef safe, but haven't yet found an owner of one that said it damaged corals.

I've got a 125, and although I understand they will hide a lot and probably tend to come out more at night, I would still enjoy watching them. I stay up late lots of nights, so I spend a lot of time with a flashlight watching things. I figure they're not a lot of money, and wouldn't be a big biological load on the tank, so why not try one? If it works out well, another would likely be in the future.

I have a question about Pom Pom Crabs

I have a question about Pom Pom Crabs

I am thinking about getting a Pom Pom Crab for my perspective nano reef. They seem to be interesting little creatures. One worry that I have is that I read that they are filter feeders and it seems from reading on here that it is hard to feed filter feeders. Can anyone here give me an insight about their eating habits?

My Pom Pom (Buster Crab) is not often seen, but when he's out and about, he's a hoot to observe. He has learned to hang around the feeding tube I use after lights out and I usually manage to shoot him a little something to snack on. He carries two healthy, growing anemones. I also have a Porcelain Crab (Crab Louie) and he's front and center all day. I've found both species to be absolutely reef safe.

Here's mine, awesome crab. I've had him about 8 months now in my 14g BioCube, he eats whatever I put in there and always comes out to feed. At first he was a bit shy but now I see him all over the place.

If I put my finger up to the glass he comes over and starts waving his anemones at me :eek2:

I got a 54 gallon, and I almost never see it... probably best for a nano tank... such a cute critter though.

Most people that say the pom pom isnt reef safe is because they care an anemone that can sting any of your corals as it walks by... luckly this hardly happens (i have never had it happen to me)

The crab uses the anemone as a "mop" to get food.. so the anemone gets food this way... although i dont think the crab actually feeds the anemone... it gets the pickins

My crab is normally visable through a cave (with a light) always moving her hands. When i feed she sometimes comes out and ill squirt her a little something....

My pompom likes to do the robot, as its very jerky with its movements

Oh, pleaaaseeeee!! How could this pretty little "robot dancer" crab damage any coral?!?!

I had this pom-pom crab and also the porcelain crab and they never caused any problem in my mix corals tank.

Here I send a picture of mine in the bag the day of arrival! :inlove:

Greetings!

I have one in my 90 gal and three in my 6 gal nano. I see them in both tanks during the day and evenings.

Definately a she! Look at those eggs! :celeb1:

Just to clear some things up...

there are no "appendages" on the crab. It physically holds two tiny anemones in its pinchers. (Reading the second poster's post again, I believe they were thinking of porcelain crabs, not pom-pom crabs.)

Also, they don't get anywhere near 2-3 inches. They are extremely tiny, hence being recommended for a nano.
