Pom Poms...

Anyone ever had any luck fragging Pom Pom xenias? I figure when my tank is established I'll try fragging the small colony of xenia with my students.

I hear you can cut em at the stalk and attach the polyp to something and more polyps will grow off the stalk and the head of the xenia that was cut off will attach to a rock.

I have ripped them off... I have cut them with scissors... I have shredded them... They're impossible to kill... :) Easy to frag... ;)

Thanks Randy,

They are a nice addition to the tank and was wondering what we can do with them to get the kids excited about fragging etc. I owe you a lot of thanks for the LR, its great!

They are weeds that spread like wildfire...look out or you'll have an entire tank of them.

Haha... funny thing about weeds is that they are the native species that belong there :)

At least they are fun looking weeds that my students will have fun fragging for class.

I had a few stalks of xenia just pop up from nowhere thinking I had gotten rid of it almost a year ago. I REALLY need to go scrape it off before it decides to go haywire....again! I have seen what it can do to a nice 75 gallon tank left unchecked. It was amazing that much xenia could fit in one mans tank! It looked pretty cool all pom pommy and pulsing but sheeze that stuff can grow fast!

Yea, your kids will "love" the smell of fresh cut xenia ;) It is amazing and very interesting to see coral in person and how it heals up and keeps on growing. Hope the tank does well for you and the kids!

A student of mine and I fragged our first stalk of Xenia Friday. It wasn't getting enough light where it was stuck on a piece of base LR so we just sliced it off at the base. I poked a hole through it with a sterile needle and thread a piece of fishing string through the stalk and tied it to a piece of rubble. Pulsing beautifully today!
