Just finished my new pond with waterfall in my backyard. Trying to figure out how I can DIY some sort of a mechanical/biological filtering system. I know there are a lot of creative and ingenious that could help me with a design.:D thanks

get a section of large diam PVC, One end cap, one "drain" cap with slots, and drill the end cap to accept either threaded or solvent plumbing to connect it to your pump. Then just fill the pipe with 1" landscaping lava rock, press on the ends, and submerge with your pump.

Just like scooter said Lava rock filters work good and cheep 2, for mine I used a Rubemade storage box
Drilled holes in the lid and one out the side near the bottom filled with
lava rocks first and cotton filter material on top. Connect pump to the hole in the side for water flow and you’re in bizz.

I got ambitious this weekend and did one like see sick said with lava rock and a filtering material. Unfortunately there is no way to connect my main pump to the fliter so i place the filter box behind the waterfall and have a supply and gravity return lines. Anyone have a small pump that i can hook up to test this out to run the filter box? i used the 1/2 inch black poly sprinkler line for the runs. thanks billy

Aside from a few mosquito fish and some pond plants I've never noticed any need to spend money on additional pond filtering for our little pond.

Depends on what kind of pound you have rivoth, it sounds like you need a filter if you are breading mosquito’s more water movement.
