Poor polyp extention on confusia and rainbow

orthokardia

New member
over the last week my confusia and rainbow are showing poor polyp extention. there are other "more difficult" sps in the same area doing well and the confusia in the 300 (same water) is super fuzzy. The body of the confusia is actually getting it's green back that it lost in the shade of the 300. Any thoughts?

KH Spike? Usually if your Parameters are off you will see signs of stress in SPS, Check your KH Ca And Salinity I always go to the Basics first when things don't look right JMO

RBTA on top of that rainbow? I just lost a large Rainbow because my RBTA decided to camp on top of it now he is messing with a large plate, Setosa, and spongodes (or how ever you spell it) It has pretty much wiped 2 other zoe colonies as well. My RBTA is a killer I am looking forward to a species only tank when I get back home. Might as well have a carpet with all the money this guy costs me! good luck on yours sorry to hijack your thread.

+1 on re-check the water parameters. does not look like a flow change or any thing else and seems like you would have picked up on that one. almost looks like it is getting covered up or some thing like that. Bummer they are nice.

If you dose directly to the display then that can do this esp if you don't have large flow. So if you have a return that is directly above this coral or blasting on this one then this could be the culprit as well if you are dosing to the sump close to the return.

when mine changes, high or low, only certain corals (my purple grimmace) will be the first one to show it, while the others look fine

I guess what im saying is that the two corals are in the same water system so they have the same KH water flows from his sump into the phoenix then down tothe 300 then to the sump.

Ca is very important for this coal as well. Poor ca will make it look like this faster than other Sps. I don't know about your setup just a sugestion.

kh=8
ca=300
sg=1.0225
total water vol=530gal
the sg was higher, but i added about 10 gal too much fresh water today.

Doubtful!

Doubtful!

i was gonna say ca is low too......a water change should bring it back up enough shouldnt it guys?

With as much water volume as Bart has he will need to use some type of Booster like Turbo Ca (Like I got at the Meeting) or the Ca part of 2 part, But I would raise it over several day's as to not shock the system. There is a Calculator to Figure how much to dose to raise it a certain amount each day.

I was shooting for natural seawater level of 320 as i am running ecobak. when my SG gets back to 1026 (natural evaporation) it should be right around 320-340. Am i off on this?? Also what par should i shoot for for these? i remember someone posted a link, but i can not find it:(

the rainbows sunset ect ect. in that encrusting catagory will all bennefit from higher CA than 320-330 just been my experience both polup extension color and growth. They are the first thing to show a lower Ca. Just my experience they have alwasy been the bellwether of lower CA.

Bart there are No Corals that need less than 400 on the Ca and 440 is Ideal, I don't know where you got the 300# but that's just Wrong for Any SPS.

Most books, articles and on-line resources I've read suggest a minimum Calcium level of 400. Recomendations range from 400 to 450 - so I shoot for 425.

thank you for the correction. i will get some supplement today. i am not sure that is the total cause though as my other confusia, the mother colony, is fuzzy as ever??
poor pic, but you can see what i mean
