You are correct. They are "filter" feeders. No in the way bivalves are, but the do filter feed in a way. They use the mandibles to filter water for food then eat the food from there. Very fun to watch.

I have 2, one in my haddoni and one in my mini maxi. Cool to watch them ride the nem. Any of the small foods is fine. I feed nutra ova in my soup mix. Had mine for almost a yr now.
I had one on a large RBTA of mine. And it would steal food or knock it out of the nems mouth and almost killed my bta so I tossed it on my haddoni and it never left or bothered the haddoni.
I've had this guy for 11 months. I don't feed him. He gets what he needs from the nem and the water column. I've closely watched him when he's feeding and the particles are so small you can't even see them.
Thanks Scott.............I've read that clowns kick out the crabs often, but I wanted to give it a try. My nigripes don't really seem to mind him.
With that big Gig of yours, I'd give it a try. It may be able to hang out underneath with the clowns above if they don't want him in there.
It's possible certain clowns species are less likely to evict the crabs. Honestly, if I could do it over again, I'd just get a pair of crabs or anemone shrimps. The females clowns get aggressive, attack to your hands, kick up sand all the time, ect.
If you do get a crab make sure it's a porcelain anemone crab and not just the regular porcelain crab. They regular ones are more opportunistic feeders and will steal food.
