Porites Worm Rock care

Hi

Has anyone successfully maintained a porites wormrock for a long period of time?

My husband has always wanted one and now after a couple of years we finally found a nice one and brought it home yesterday.

It seems to me that long term the worm population deminishes in captivity. But I don't know many who have kept them either. So I'm hoping that perception is misguided.

I figure we should be able to keep the porites happy...and sure have plenty of feather dusters, etc. growing like crazy. It shouldn't be rocket science...?

If anyone has any pointers on keeping the coral and worms happy, I'd appreciate it.

Mine is 1.5 years in captivity, that I know of. It had been attacked by an angelfish in a different persons tank, before I got it. all the worms are still there, the half eaten ones grew back. The porites is definitely much bigger. I was thinking it would be harder, but it has been very undemanding in my 180 gallon reef. I have a refugium, and don't target feed it, but do feed the tank filter feeders in general.

I feed the tank a couple times per month, cyclops, rotifers, rods food, dt's plhytoplankton, oyster eggs. But if I stop feeding for a few months, the worms look good still.

I don't think 1.5 years is really a long time, but they look good. If anything, I think a bigger, older tank will give you more chance of success. Provide SPS quality light & flow.

Our 180 is about a year and a half old. It's mixed but more on the SPS side. We feed the fish well, and do feed micro foods for the filter feeders also.

Currently the rock is on the sand bed, under 250mh 14k (x3). Do you have your down low?

Sounds like your tank is ready.

It is pretty low, click on the red house, and you can see it left side of picture, low to the left of the yellow scroll coral. I have 250 watt 10K's x3.

The other thing is this coral will shed every few weeks, so don't be alarmed if you come in one day and it's polyps are all closed up.
