Hi, Is there a possibility of getting a A. japonicus x A. nigricans Hybrid?

I am not really sure if I got hybrid or a variant.

First, it have A. japonicus caudal fin.
Second, it have a bright orange tint at the end of the dorsal and anal fin.
Thirdly, its body color is like a mixture of the a A. japonicus and A. nigricans (Might not be a difference as it might varies, I just put for the sake if there is a difference)

The face is A. nigricans face...

I know if there is a photo, it will be easier to comment. I will try to get a photo after my lights are up and if it is swimming out more. But I dun wan to get my hope up too high, it might be a varient.. Just want to see if anyone have a similar one..

Terry, this is a documented hybrid so it's possible... nigricans is the promiscuous species of the bunch... hybridizing with achilles, leucosternon and japonicus...:fun4:

Hi copps, is there any photo that you might happen to have.. as I have never seen this hybrid before until i stumbled upon on yesterday.. maybe they are not that attractive compared to the other hybrids.. but it would be quite nice to see them as I can't find any photo on the web... The other two hybrid have seen before in person..

This is the closest I've got, A. achiles X A. nigricans hybrid photographed in Guam:

The video, not sure if can notice that the tail is like a japonicus tail... The orange tinge on the end of the dorsal and anal fin can be seen...

Hey Terry, I've seen a photo somewhere, but I do not recall... this hybrid is documented by Jack Randall and he published a paper in 2000 on the hybrids in the achilles complex... it's of course a more subtle hybrid... I own two nigricans hybrids but unfortunately they are with achilles and leucosternon... get pics!

Hi copps, thanks for the info, I will see if I can find the book by jack randall in my library... I will borrow a camera and get a more decent photo...

It's not a book Terry, it's a research paper. Here is the full reference:

Randall, J. E. and J. Frische. 2000. Hybrid surgeonfishes of the Acanthurus achilles complex. aqua, Journal of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology v. 4 (no. 2): 51-56.

Is there any way I can find it online or anywhere? By the way I am not located in US...

Terry all I see is nigricans, although it's tough as I feel like I'm watching the fish through a Coke bottle...:D Can you get better pics?
