Possible New Cure for Ick?

Re: Possible New Cure for Ick?

I just got a new 240G with 180G sump. After curing the sand and 5 year old cured live Rocks for 5 weeks I moved my Achilles, Powder Blue Tangs with Regal Angel and few other smaller fishes into my new tank. A week later they both had ICK. After reading this post I used my Chinese ginger powder and normal ginger and blended them all together with fresh Ahi fish. 3 days ago was the first feeding with ginger and fish. Second day they all looked better. Today after 3rd feeding I can hardly see any ick on the PB Tangs The Achilles Tang still has some spots. I will keep you posted but seems like its working :) I know the ICK cycles so hopefully its done.

Thanks cratylus
Simon

PS. During feeding I shutdown skimmers and carbon/Phosban but after 20 minutes of feeding I turn on all the skimmers and reactors.

Four days ago I came home from work to find an outbreak of ick in my 125g. Three fish, all had a major case of ick... presumably from the newly introduced Cuban Hog. In the past when I've suffered an ick outbreak I've tried all the standard remedies to get rid of it. Selcon. Garlic. Kick-Ick. UV. FW dips. Hyposalinity. Etc. I've had little success with any of those.

This time, out of frustration, I tried something a bit unorthodox. I added Ã"šÃ‚¼ tsp. of ginger to my normal homemade fish food concoction (don't ask why, you'll think I'm crazy). I figured the worse thing that could happen is that the three fish die and I start over again (something I had already reserved myself to anyway). At any rate, something amazing happened. The next day I came home from work to find not a single white dot on any of the fish! One feeding, 24 hours, no ick!

Has anyone else tried/had success with this method?

This is amazing. The next time my kids get Ich, I'm trying the ginger approach. Thanks for keeping this thread alive.

I'm sure that this has been mentioned some time in this long thread but the visible signs of ich typically go away on their own if fish are not stressed. I can call Dunkin Doughnuts a cure for the common cold if I eat them every time I get a cold and get over it. If you are looking for a reefsafe treatment for ich feed well, keep params good and stress low. Also realize that neither good conditions, garlic nor ginger are actually going to cure ich, your fish is just going to fight it to the point it is not visible. :)

Hey... just have a question... when you put your fish in QT tank and treat with copper does the copper pass thru there digestive system??? is this a stupid question??

Thanks
Michael

Wow, this thread has been awesome. I wish though, that people would not get so uptight about experiments. I find it very informative, interesting, and exciting to hear about new treatments.

I only read the forst 5 pages or so of this thread,

but all I can say is that some people are nice enough to suggest a thought
and some people are so hard headed, closed minded, pessimistic, and
****ed that they didnt think of it first.

Thanks to OP (cratylus) for trying something

Well Huston we have a problem, the Fish only tank or was supposed to be a fish only tank just got stocked heavily in the last few days, and now also has corals, no chance of catching any of the fish, I cant even reach the bottom of the tank. So I looked up what is out there, No Ich didnt get positive reviews, its 50.00 per treatment, and it has to be done daily, my skimmer needs to be shut off, that wont happen, so I willing to try this. I have at the present time one dead wrasse (removing it isn't possible), On the badly infected side I have 3 Moris Idols, (all still eating like pigs) a Blond Naso, 2 two butterflies, and 3 Wrasses badly infected, the rest of the fish are lightly infected so far,

I don't take treating this tank lightly, we have over 20k in the tank, but the last time I let the ich run its course we only had 1 fish left. If ginger/garlic works it will save about 5k in live stock

We shall see, and yes its Ich, I have been keeping SW for over 40 years.

The tank in question is over 400 gal with a total system volume of 650 gal

First 24 hour report, No change in the majority of the fish, but now the fox face has it and his eyes are cloudy, just before lights out, he was just resting on the bottom, I don't have much hope for him. All other fish are still eating

wow what a thread...my thoughts are ..some people dont get bitten buy mosquitos soeme thing about them they wont bite..maybe when fish eat this stuff the itch wont attack them.. then it would break the life cycle..and work..who knows..

My Hippo just showed spots last night and now he has fewer but I need to try to pull them out and treat if possible. Hope some of the more experienced posters still monitor this and hopefully I can get a reply from them.

Added ginger to food, impressive results

Added ginger to food, impressive results

I had an ammonia spike last week that stressed out some fish. The blue tang got ich of course. I added some ginger extract to his food and today there is a significant reduction in ich and stress. Well see if it lasts but so far so good.

Visual signs of ich are transitory but that does not mean the ich is gone. Please read the stickies on ich.
