i have peppermints and they're great at cleanup. cleaners can potentially bother and stress the seahorses if the horses don't want to be cleaned. plus peps are cheaper

i initally got the peps to clean up my aptasia problem, but was worried that they'd hord the food as that's what they used to do at feeding time before i got seahorses. they went right up to the top of the tank where the food was. but with seahorses, i think the peps have an instinctual fear of them, so they lay low and eat the leftovers. perfect.

and the aptasia's gone!

just get big enough peps that the horses don't actually eat them.

I could not find any full tank shots , but I hope you forgive me for sharing anyway . these are 4 & 5 mos old erectus juvi's I raised ( they are a couple months older now ) . and some gulf pipefish fry that I could not get a good pic of . they were so small and as thin as dog hairs when they were born , they were in one of those really small condiment cups when I took the pics.

thanks . that is my 35g hex erectus juvi tank . the camera was borrowed , but I will see if I can use it again this week . I will try to get FTS of the parents and pipefish tanks as well .

Because they are not safe seahorse tankmates. CBS can be very aggressive. Fire shrimp can also be bothersome...but not nearly as bad as a CBS. Peppermint shrimp are usually ok. Nassarius snails are the "cleaner" of choice because not only do they keep the sandbed stirred a bit...but they eat excess mysis just as shrimp would.

5g dwarf seahorse tank, unfortunately still in cycle.

No corals. 8 possibly 9 macros (if that teacup somehow survived) and shoal grass. Some mini stars, some really pretty mini featherduster worms, 2 narcissa snails and a tiny hermit crab.

We just added peppermints today, but the army of nassarius and konks are fantastic.
We only added the peps hoping they would eat aptasia and reproduce

Very cool tank. What kind of rock is that?
we put ours up in Feb so it is fairly new as well.
Did you consider seeding with pods?

The rock is from haiti. I bought it off ebay. 100# for 340.00 or something like that. The shipping was a disaster, but the rock is awsome. I didn't have to seed it with pods since I used established LR from my reef tank in the sump. I have so many copapods I'm thinking of borrowing the mandarin from my reef tank to eat some of them. They cover the glass day and night, lol. My sea horses eat the amphipods, but the copapods are too tiny I think. Thanks.

ReefNut, that tank is so CLEAN! It doesn't even look like there is water in it!
My 38g is doing very well. I have a pair of H. Comes (my other male passed) along with 3 pepp's, 2 scarlet reef hermies, a dozen assorted snails, a firefish and a pair of pj cardinals. I love my peppermint shrimp but have never seen any eggs, but they do molt, at least one a week, so there must be babies at times. Let's see if I have any presentable pics...
