Potassium iodide superior to Lugol's?

I hope to hear some good answers about this also, as I was just thinking about this yesterday...

I'm curious what will be the answers as well.

Gary, I know that Lugol's is Iodine, Potassium Iodide and distilled water, but when you buy just Potassium Iodide, is it already mixed in distilled water? Or, do you need to mix it RO before you dose? I ask because I know Lugol's is used in smaller amounts (compared to many off the shelf Iodine supplements); if Potassium Iodide isn't dilluted, then it sounds like it would be some potent stuff.

Honestly, I didn't even know that people used just Potassium Iodide. I always thought they meant Lugol's. :p

Lugols is potassium iodide and brightwell is potassium chloride I believe. Iodide gives Lugol's it's yellow orange color. Check out the fourth post down. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1906920
You are a little confused. Lugol's, like Kaserpick says, is a solution of iodine and potassium iodide mixed with distilled water.
Brightwell is a brand....
Potassium chloride is used for increase potassium, that is a major element not trace. Pretty different from what potassium iodide it's for.

Hope this isn't too off topic, but could someone explain the reasons for Iodide suppliment in todays hobby?

Ten years ago I adhered to a strict Pottasium Iodide/Strontium regime, but have longed since moved away from it in favor of frequent water change schedule.

what's better and why.
Special weight given to credible responses :)

I have no credible response but think they are the same

I am only posting because it is one less mouse click than subscribing to the thread the other way..........

I'm still confused on this.

Obviously(?) there must be a chemical difference between Lugol's solution and Potassium Iodide. Additionally, there must be reasons for choosing to dose one over the other.

Let's totally eliminate the question of whether or not dosing either is proper for a reef aquarium.

What is the difference between Lugol's Solution and Potassium Iodide and why do some people choose to dose one over the other?

1st ki or potassium iodide is a mix of potassium and iodide the two together should give off a white color. lugols is just iodide which is "unsafe" but it is easy to mix together with other elements that will make it safe and that how you come by potassium iodide.

from what i know is the safty between the two and the price. use lugols as long as you dont od it if your scared use ki potassium iodide (which dont get me wrong you can still kill something with it) when you have ? like this you can always look up in a chem book or give seachem or brightwell a call both places should be willing to help you. just dont forget its all simple chem
