Potentially new type of lighting bulb?

Just caught this off of Cnet. It seems like it may have potential not only for street lights but for our tanks as well. It's a plasma bulb.

"Silicon Valley's Luxim has developed a lightbulb the size of a Tic Tac that gives off as much light as a streetlight."

Due to it's design it is more energy efficient and therefore produces less heat per Watt.

Here's the Cnet video

Way cool. I hope they figure out a way to make it marketable in the reef community. I could use more light for less electricity.

And less space! they failed to mention how long a bulb lasts and what it costs to replace though.

pfo is already on their fourth prototype, and have ceased making improvements to the solaris. they'll be calling it the 'uranus plasma system' starting at $10k for the 12 inch model.

IMO the 'bulbs' will never burn out. There are no electrodes going into the bulb, it is just a sealed ampule of Argon gas; nothing to burn out. Very cool.
