Potter's Angelfish Infection

Hey all,

I have a Potter's angel with a bit of a problem. He's eating mysis like a champ, no issue there. He stayed at the store for 3-4 weeks before I brought him home. When I brought him home I noticed his fins were slightly raggedy and one eye is slightly cloudy. I have run him through a full course of maracyn 2 (he's in QT) but he has not improved. He also seems to be swimming a little funny - like he's not moving the front half of his body, if that makes sense.

Any suggestions?

Any twitching of the head? My initial thought based on your observations would be flukes, and if he's twitching his head I would say almost certainly flukes. I would run Prazipro on him. GL.

+1 I used to have a potters angel with the same eye problem but that disappated by itself.

I have seen no twitching. I was going to treat for flukes anyway but thought these symptoms were more indicative of a bacterial infection so I treated that first.

I have prazipro but I have lost a few fish while using it. Does hypo get rid of flukes?

Hypo does nothing for flukes. If you are concerned about Prazi (I've yet to have an issue with it) then do a FW dip in a clear container. Like Austin pointed out I also think it is likely flukes.

I agree, this definately sounds like flukes.

I woudn't worry about using prazipro as long as your fish is eating well (which you said he is) and you dose it according to the instructions on the bottle. I treat every single fish I get with prazi and have never had a problem with it. Recently I treated my potter's with prazi because I suspected she had a few flukes. She's been looking better than ever after the treatment.

Lost him...

Can't believe he was eating like a pig and fine at the store for about a month. Brought him home even though his eye was slightly cloudy and his fins were a little tattered because he was going into a QT for treatment anyway. Within a week he got terrible - fins all ripped up, sunken in sides near the pectorals, some sort of growth on one side by the pectorals.

I'm sorry to hear he died.

Was he breathing heavily too? Did you ever try treating with prazipro or anything else?

When I got him home I started Maracyn 2 on him. After input from this thread, on day 4 of 5 I stopped the maracyn treatment to treat with prazi instead. He steadily got worse over the 4 days of maracyn treatment and the first few days of prazi treatment, by the third or fourth day of prazi he was breathing heavy and starting to get loaded down with ich, I did a water change to begin lowering the salinity, he died the next day.

EDIT: also, he stopped eating during prazi treatment (I have had this issue with several other fish as well).

I had the same thing happen to my first potters and treated with maracyn and he was eating like a trooper and died. My seccond one i have had for almost a year and is stunning. Just a shame he likes eating corals lol

Sorry for your loss :(

Don't be too hard on Prazi because of this, fish will stop eating under this treatment if they have internal parasites... I've only had this happen once or twice, and they would eventually pass the parasite while under Prazi. I also suspect he was pretty bad off before you started Prazi.
