Potters with a Flame!

Couldn't resist getting a small Potters today. Is in my intro/QT, and will be for a while. Was eating brine and mysis at the LFS. My DT contains a pretty large Flame. Anyone here add a Potters to a tank with a resident Flame? I think If I let it grow a bit before adding to the DT, should be OK. Thoughts?
 
Unless the DT is fairly large (250+g) I dont think it will last. I imagine it will be a slow and hard to watch demise. I think you should take it back. If you really want both, take the flame out, get a new flame, then add both the potters and the flame at the same time, and even then you would need a good size tank (perhaps 75+)
 
Mixing Centropyge has no definite answer. I know of at least one member who has had more than two species of dwarf angel in a 65 or 75 gallon tank. It really does depend on the individual fish and whether or not they'll accept another family member or not.
 
A buddy of mine had a Potters and Flame in his tank with no problems. But they were about the same size, were introduced at the same time, and his tank was 210.

to have 2 or more dwarves in the same tank is not unheard of... but as you mentioned about your friend....tank size, introduction at same time, lots of rockwork, etc. While the above poster is right about each fish being it's own so to speak, you can get as much of an advantageous approach as possible by doing it the way others have had the most success with. Introduce same time to the right size tank.

Maybe your LFS would let you trade in the Flame. Maybe you could just have a sump troll.
 
wont work unless its a big tank. the flame will chase the potter non stop. if the potter can survive the first week, then it has a chance. otherwise, no.
 
My potters was established in my tank before adding my flame so it is in reverse of your situation. Flames or historically much more bold fish than potters so my experience is probably not relevant to yours. However I do have 5 angels in my tank (potters, flame, swallowtail, bellus and anularis) with no beef among any of these fish and I credit it to how I introduce fish to the system:

I always use an acclimation box.

Acclimation boxes will save you headaches (and money) and are a great way to introduce fish. Just leave your fish in the box for a week or two and allow everyone to get accustomed to it. Once no other fish are paying it any attention open it up at night and cross your fingers. There is always that initial shock and all the fish are a little flighty but there is non of the aggressive chasing and pinning to the top that WILL happen if you just drop the fish in.

The potters and flame look AWESOME together. Super flashy combo :thumbsup:

I think the Potters will hang out in my 30 gal intro tank for while. Plan is to upgrade to a larger tank (265 range) in the early Fall, so will have an opportunity to re-establish pecking order then. For now, in my 90, Flame would have to go.
 
I have a pair of potters and one flame, with some other dwarf angels, in a 180g for almost a year now. No problem between the potters and the flame. Using of an acclimation box is a good advice. I used some egg crates and zip ties to make an acclimation box.
 
My fish trap works double duty as my acclimation box. Toss in some PVC or a small chunk of live rock (i do both) and you're good to go. Use your algae magnets to hold it on.

I take out the plastic tube thing in the center and use that hole to squirt food into the box. It opens up a lot of room not having the center filled. Careful with small fish and that hole where the tube goes...I've had a tiny fish swim out and go straight into the display. I feed the box and the display at the same time so that the new fish can get used to eating in the swarm of wrasses and anthias.

Looks a tad tight for two weeks, no? I've been toying with making one from some leftover eggcrate and acrylic scraps, but was going to go with something in the 18Lx6 Wx10H range.

Depends on size of the fish. It's 11" long and 7 or 8" tall so its bigger than what it looks in the photo.

I've kept a baby annularis in it for 2 weeks with zero problems at all. Most fish are in it for 2 days to a week. All depends on who is upset and how quickly they settle down.
 
I added a Potter's to my 215g that had an established pair of Flames, as well as an established Flameback and established Regal. The Potter's had arrived at the LFS very skittish and slow to eat, but I watched him grow more bold and eat aggressively before bringing him home. It's been 8 months, and he's doing fine. The chasing was just enough to let him know who was there first, and no biting actually occurred.

Seriously the large flame will be male. If the potters is small enough it will be female, and the mix will be no problem. Dither around, and keep it some time it may change sex and then it's a nono. Mixing Centropyge is not a problem - mixing males is.
