Powder Blue on a Rampage

For over two years, my Powder Blue and Yellow Tangs have been fairly respectful towards eachother. All of a sudden, the Powder Blue is on a rampage and not letting the Yellow Tang out and is even sometimes bothering some of the other fish. Ironically and until recently, the Yellow Tang was actually the aggressor and would be the one to go after the powder blue, but it was always mild.

Has anyone had a fish go crazy like this in an established environment? (I have not) What was the outcome? Did it subside over time? I've been thinking of adding a fish to this tank anyway and might do so soon to help disperse the aggression.

oh man, you need to quit the hobby now.

Throw all your rock and corals out, and be sure to label the garbage bags "FISH IN HERE" with plenty of water so that when they get to the hudson river harbor, they can stand a chance of surviving being dumped.......................

vin that is strange! as most of us know the fighting usually occurs at firsts intro and once settled doesnt occur again with intensity!. maybe the yellow tang is testing his dominance.? mine is an occasional freak. every few months i notice marks on my clowns. then when i watch at night i see him impossing on them and asking for it..then he slashes...leaving a mark. he does this and eventually the clowns get so annoyed they nip and attack .then one day it stops and doesnt happen again for a long time.... i would say wait a few weeks. as long as attack-ee can eat still? can the yellow get food? is the powder eating.:) :) :)

Mating season, or perhaps maturity ages have been reached.

Turf wars happen, perhaps the one has had enough and is fighting back?

definatly consider. but maybe with time the yellow will understand its the time/age of the powder blue and become subserviate. very plausible

The maturity thing was the first thing that popped into my mind as well. Hope all works out for you. Maybe a second feeding clip could help give the yellow some help. My thinking is the fish can't be two places at once.

I was wondering about the maturity thing myself, but I've had my Achilles Tang for 4 years (got him as a juvenile) and have never seen him go through a phase like this.

Dave D., the only thing the Yellow Tang is testing right now is if it's OK for him to come out of the rocks. :D

It may be time for a new fish or two. :) Maybe some foxface spines will keep him busy!

You're right Espi, this is just too much for me to handle. A $400 + utility bill and often not having the time to properly care for the animals I keep is no problem, but a couple fish not playing nice is too much. Since you are so much stronger than me, I will take it all down and give it all to you ............. for $1 million dollars. Jack a$$ :D I happen to offer sarcasm as a free service as well. I've had this Yellow Tang for over 2 years and would really like it if I could keep it from dieing.

I've heard of others having the same problems with PBT's, including a fellow club member. After a couple of years of relatively peaceful behavior it turned into a monster.

replace powder blue where i typed yellow tang in my first post top section. LOL! has the fighting increased ?.

I would put ion my 2 sences and say that the fish are growing and getting bigger and more Teritorial and loking for new areas, i would be very careful, because the powderblue will be the agresser and the winner i have seen some things on TV and the 2 fought and the 3-5 powderblues chased off hundreds of yellow tangs, but always a good resaon for another tank....or sell him ?...........

any way a thought
