Powder Blue Tang in 180g - would you?

I'm in planning stage of stocking a 180g tank. Planning on adding Royal Gramma, 6 line wrasse, Coral Beauty, a blue damselfish, and a small school of chromis. What I'm strugling to decide on is the tang. It's either a Kole Tang, and I know things will stay peaceful, or the Powder Blue Tang, with the risk that things might get rough.
What I don't know, and would like your advice if you have had PBT's, is their aggression generally directed towards other tangs only? Or anything that moves?

The powder blue will be fine with all those fish... id be more worried about the damsels and chromis then the PBT.... just put him in last

Yes. Yes YES. Beautiful fish.

Why bother with the blue damsel if you already have a blue-colored tang a bunch of chromis.

And you can do better than a sixline. Look into a cooler wrasse. Ditto with the coral beauty - get a real angel! Regal or bi-color, or at least a flame!

^ I like everything about brett559's statement. If only there were a 'like' button... oh well.

Go for thw powder blue, IME they will usually only bother laterally compressed fish.

Also, there are qay 'better' wrasses than sixlines.

I'm open to suggestions on both wrasses and angels!!!

I'm a sucker for electric blue damselfish, I've been more or less lucky as well, I haven't had any particularly agresive ones. Plus, it's such a small fish, it can't really harrass anything except the royal gramma probably.

Good to hear on the PBT, it's by far one of the best looking fish IMO.

Have you considered the Azure, Yellow-tail or Starki Damsels? Pretty much the same blue color with less aggression.

The six-line can become a problem down the line if you want to add another small fish one day especially considering that most Chromis schools work their way down to a single fish in the end. Flashers and many of the Fairy Wrasses may end up being a better fit.

And yes yes yes get the PBT!!!

Good Luck
Mike

just leave the damsel out. i dont understand ever keeping one. straight *** holes

I have the same problem with tangs - I don't get it why so many people want to keep these restless ich bombs in their tanks?
I'd rather have a bunch of damsel fish - to me a tank without a pair is incomplete.

I agree even though I have two. However I have largish tanks and a rigorous quarantine protocol.

I love tangs. Not as much as butterflies, but love them nonetheless. Proper QT is a must.
Once past that hurdle, my yellow, chevron, Naso and Powder Blue have been nothing but model citizens. Once in a great while the PBT will push the Naso out of the way, but that is usually to get to some food. He couldn't care less about the other tank inhabitants.

Just moved the yellow tang to a tank with a1 yellow and 1 blue damsel. I used to never see the damsel. He was out like a shot to defend his territory.
I liked Fiji Blue Devil damsel I had in the beginning. Pretty mellow for a damsel.

Did you want the wrasse for pest control or looks? For pest conrol small Halichoeres species such as chrysus, chrysotaenia, iridis, richmondi, and timorensis are great. Cuc is at risk with these guys, but the sixline is too, just more of a jerk. For color and activity, fairy and flasher wrasses are great.

I also highly recommend the more peaceful damsels from the genus Chrysiptera. They are brightly colored and not nearly as pugnacious as some of their cousins.

Majestic angels and powder blue tangs look nice together. Their colors are both striking and contrast really well.

I was thinking of 6 line for looks, but I also like the flasher wrasses, if they're more peaceful. The damsel I have in mind is Chrysiptera cyanea.

What is "Cuc"?

id go with the blue tang some smaller angels (flame , coral beauty, potters) and then some flasher wrasses

I had not thought of the clean-up crew until you mentioned it. I'm guessing you are referring to cleaner shrimp and hermits? Do Flasher wrasse eat them as well? I'll have to think that through.
