My pbt
Hello,
Thank you guys so much for the info! I also have a powder blue tang. I was advised to try and buy a larger specimen (4-5") as opposed to the tiny ones. The reason for this is the young ones do not do well in shipping. So I observed mine at my lfs for 2 months before i forked over the 60 bucks for him. The lfs had him in a 60 gallon system, connected to other tanks. The fish is very healthy, fat kinda bossy but not too much. He is with a small yellow tang, 6-liner, 5 blue-green chromis, 2 twinspots, yellow watchman and yasha goby. The blue-greens are the last fish that i got for my system. i am not getting anymore fish. My system is a 120 gallon with a 60 gallon sump running filter socks, bubble mag skimmer 700, refugium w/chaeto, 2 hydors 1200 running alternate flow 30 sec burn each. Rockwork is very important to keep it open and sparse for tangs and waterflow. He has a lot of swimming room, I do not have 120 lbs of rock, I probably have a little more than half. Sps frags here and there, with elegance coral and frogspawn. He eats everything! I drip acclimated him for 2 hours then let him in. I did not qt because I do not have a qt setup that is big enough for him. I do have a few small bouts with ich, but he is doing good. I found the key to keeping this tang is frequent feedings, selcon and garlic soaks, nori, hikari algae wafers and pellets as snacks (I do not soak these, I just drop it in tank). i soak the frozen food, spiralina flakes and spectrum pellets at the same time for the 2 main feedings when the system lights are on. Soak for at least 10 minutes, maybe longer... Do frequent water changes, I change 10 gallons every week, vacuum sand, clean the equipment (pumps, returns, skimmer, etc) at least once a month. If possible, pull out sump and power wash it as well. I do that every couple of months. I believe that this really gets rid of a lot of ich and other parasites, gets rid of the yucky stuff in the sump, and I get to do a 30 gallon water change at the same time! Cheers!
