Powder blue tang primer

I'm readying my 55 gal Quarantine tank to welcome a new PBT in a few weeks. I used to just put the fish directly in the DT, but I've learned my lesson.

My pbt

Hello,
Thank you guys so much for the info! I also have a powder blue tang. I was advised to try and buy a larger specimen (4-5") as opposed to the tiny ones. The reason for this is the young ones do not do well in shipping. So I observed mine at my lfs for 2 months before i forked over the 60 bucks for him. The lfs had him in a 60 gallon system, connected to other tanks. The fish is very healthy, fat kinda bossy but not too much. He is with a small yellow tang, 6-liner, 5 blue-green chromis, 2 twinspots, yellow watchman and yasha goby. The blue-greens are the last fish that i got for my system. i am not getting anymore fish. My system is a 120 gallon with a 60 gallon sump running filter socks, bubble mag skimmer 700, refugium w/chaeto, 2 hydors 1200 running alternate flow 30 sec burn each. Rockwork is very important to keep it open and sparse for tangs and waterflow. He has a lot of swimming room, I do not have 120 lbs of rock, I probably have a little more than half. Sps frags here and there, with elegance coral and frogspawn. He eats everything! I drip acclimated him for 2 hours then let him in. I did not qt because I do not have a qt setup that is big enough for him. I do have a few small bouts with ich, but he is doing good. I found the key to keeping this tang is frequent feedings, selcon and garlic soaks, nori, hikari algae wafers and pellets as snacks (I do not soak these, I just drop it in tank). i soak the frozen food, spiralina flakes and spectrum pellets at the same time for the 2 main feedings when the system lights are on. Soak for at least 10 minutes, maybe longer... Do frequent water changes, I change 10 gallons every week, vacuum sand, clean the equipment (pumps, returns, skimmer, etc) at least once a month. If possible, pull out sump and power wash it as well. I do that every couple of months. I believe that this really gets rid of a lot of ich and other parasites, gets rid of the yucky stuff in the sump, and I get to do a 30 gallon water change at the same time! Cheers!

Although mine was healthy when I got it, I noticed the vertebrae too... It took mine around 3 months to get him to his current state...

Gary... that's just, stunning.

I recently was able to procure a "tank raised" BPT who now lives in my round reef. Ate nori right out of the gate and nibbles on whatever rods I put in.
One thing I noticed that's really funny is the anthias just sort of follow her around. Very unusual behavior I've never seen before. No agression just kind of following her around.

I would love to add a pwb to my 180 gallon tank. There is one currently being sold from a local tank that has been in the tank for 6 months. My question is I have a bosy purple tang in the tank now and have to wonder how well they would get along and not stress out the new pwb causing an ick issue. I have tried 2 before that came right from a store and have lost both to ick. One of them went pretty fast, within a week or so and the second one lasted a month or so but was a fight with ick off and on the whole time. Any suggestions, should I stay away from this new pwb?

Jeff

My 6 1/2 inch Powder Blue Tang from LiveAquaria Diver's Den. He's currently in quarantine.

He is eating nori beautifully. One question, though. Do any of you notice that, when feeding flakes, they swallow the whole piece of food then spit it out and eat it again? Mine always does that to get the flakes smaller. He does eat them though.

Also, he is overall very healthy. Pretty fat, eating as said above. I have noticed that his breathing is a little quick, though. Not extremely fast, just a little quick. I'm wondering if it is just stress from being in my little bitty quarantine tank? I plan on speeding through quarantine if at all possible, because I feel he is very unhappy in my small QT. Anyways, is some quick breathing (not the really stressed, suffering from brooklynella kind of breathing), a sign of ich in the gills? No signs of ich on the body.

What size tank is the QT? Have a lot of flow in the Qt and no lights just use room light for a few days. Give him spectrum pellets and Omega one veggie pellets if you have them my PBT loves both.

The quarantine tank is 20 gallons. I do have both of those, and have been trying to feed them. None of my fish like pellet foods, even my fish in my DT.

Good news! He ate flakes and pellets (didn't try to feed mysis yet today, he might get the seahorse leftovers)! I watched him today for about 20 minutes. After a small review, I think his breathing is normal. As stated above, I will try to fly through quarantine to get this guy out of such a small tank---I know he's miserable!

Some pictures:

The spots that look to be ich aren't ich. Anyone else think he looks a bit skinny towards hit tail.

So I bought a powder blue tang after my last one died a few months ago within the first 2 weeks. Anyways this guy is about a good 6", ill get pictures up soon. He's currently feeding on nls pellets and nori, wont touch mysis shrimp or anything els but i'm not complaining! This is only his 3rd day, went straight into the display tank so far so good..

gorgeous fish, one of my favs. mine almost died in qt recently, but I believe spectrum thera plus A seem to do well for this fish

I know this is not a disease thread, but I'm hoping you all can help. I have had this hybrid powder blue in QT for 3 days. When I got home from work this evening, I noticed this on the eyes. (this is the larger of the two, but both eyes show this)

I am preparing a freshwater dip, and I may have to move the fish out of the QT if there is something that is causing this. I have had several other fish in the QT for 2-3 weeks, and they are now doing fine in the DT. Perhaps something got left behind and is now affecting this PBT?

Flukes.... Strange things in the eyes usually are sign of flukes infestation... Would drop in few bath after 10 min mark....

Bingo! Thanks. Did a 10 minute freshwater bath, and they fell off. So, then I put the fish in the display tank. Apparently the copper-treated QT is where the flukes are.

Always something.

I just got a 55 gallon QT for a PBT I finally found. How did it work out in your 55G? What kind of filtration did you use for the temporary QT?

When I qt, I use a sponge filter that was in my sump for a month.....plus I use a hang on filter, small rio power head for circulation... DO NOT put sponge filter back in dt sump after treatment. Do not use qt equipment on dt at all. Water testing is important (ammonia, nitrates, nitrite) plus water changes, diet (selcon, garlic) etc.
