Powder blue tang with ich

I've been trying for days now. I think I finally saw him eat this morning. Hopefully some of the food is gone when I get home.

I posted a picture a few posts back...

I'll try to find it locally one last time then I'll go the online route. I just think it's ridiculous that i can't find it anywhere on this island lol

In long island you should have , oriental food stores and Japanese restaurants that carry yaki nori. If you explain your plight at a restaurant and ask if you could buy a few sheets from them I'm sure they'll be happy to sell you some.

I'm originally from NJ ;) The stores I mentioned are TN and south.

I think he means to soak it with garlic and/or amino acid. I agree. He's needing more than just food in him

Sorry, yes. Soak the nori in selcon and Zoe for vitamins and amino acids. This will make less food go farther, and help him gain his weight back. If you use garlic, it may induce a feeding response but be aware long term use can cause liver problems/failure. Once he starts eating again you will be surprised how quickly he regains weight.

A couple of questions as I may have missed it, did you end up putting the yt in the DT with the pbt? Did you treat with prazipro? He may have an internal parasite robbing him of nutrients. Good luck

Yeah we have the oriental stores all over, but they're usually closed when I get out of work. I'll try walmart and if that doesn't work ill give a restaurant a try.

So I went to a different stop and shop and they had roasted nori sheets! I loaded a piece up with garlic and vitamins and chip actually took a small piece! It was only a mouth full but he did swallow it. So I guess things are going in the right direction?

Is this going to be a long recovery from the LLE? If so when should I think about puttin him in the DT? If he's eating ok for a few days should I put him in? I'm sure he's not going to blow up overnight and look normal again, but I would like to get him in the DT.

Great! Personnaly, I would wait until he is completely well before putting him in the dt with the PB. It'll take several weeks before he's well enough.

How is the PB doing? Parasites can come back if not treated long enough. That's the problem with having him in dt. If they come back they can infest the dt.

The PB seems to be doin great. I haven't seen any signs of ich, he's eating really well, and he's getting along with everyone (right now anyway haha).

Chip seems to be a little more active, hopefully that gets his hunger back too.

That's great news!

Some parasites have a 3 month or more cycle. They show up on the body, drop off to the sand bed then attach themselves on to new and old hosts. I went through this myself about 2 years ago. Took a long time to radicate them from the dt and lost more fish.

As far as Chip goes, A month or more would be best in qt after he looks well. Better safe than sorry in his case. Just keep feeding him like you are and keeping the qt clean. Do small water changes daily or every other day. Patience is required ;)

What parasites have a 3-month life cycle?

I don't remember the name of which one it was that eventually killed all of my fish. It was some time ago. Around 2 years. Gotta do some digging in my books and let you know.

Are you guys suggesting the YT can't go into the DT with lateral line erosion? If he's been through treatment and is now eating, that's exactly where he should go. It isn't contagious. My big concern there is the now established powder blue being aggressive and competing for food. I couldn't really see HLLE from the picture, he just looked very thin. Give him hefty amounts of seaweed daily, along with high protein foods like soaked PE mysis and spectrum pellets for weight gain.

I was suggesting he wait due to having to deal with the agressiveness of the PB while in poor weight/ health. He wouldn't have a fighting chance in his weakend state. Otherwise yes, he should be in the dt.

My issue with him is he won't eat anything but the nori. Even when he was healthy he wouldn't go near pellets, mysis or anything else I tried to give him. He isn't eating a lot right now, but he does get a few small pieces in. He for sure has LLE, bad. Most of his face is white and he's got the curved line running all the way down to the tail. I just wan him to fill his stomach. I haven't seen him with a full stomach in weeks. Once I see that I'll put him in the DT I think.

Also IMO if it were my tank and fish, since the pb is so agressive I would be considering a trade or return of one of the fish. Do you want agressive or docile fish? Unless you can get them to get along....

My pb is a huge sissy against my yellow tang who is 2/3 smaller than him. I almost sent the YT packing because nearly everything I tried for them to get along didn't work. Not until I emptied the tank and put everyone in trash cans to add a sand bed spraybar return. This meant reworking the rock. Low and behold everyone, not just the tangs had to come up with new territories. Since then they get along pretty well.

Maybe if you move around some rocks and take away the pb favorite hiding place, right after lights out you can add the yt and see how they do with each other. But I personally would wait until he has a little more weight on him just incase things don't go according to plan.

@Fishnoob83, you and I have the same size tanks, which is minimum realestate for a tang or two and they can get pretty large. If you CAN get them to get along I would be happy and not add more tangs in the future. FWIW. I don't know your plans.... just sayin ;) Because of mine, I'm keeping an eye out locally for a larger tank.

That's for all the info! I don't plan on putting another tang in there. I made a decision early on that I would try a YT and PB and I want to keep it at that. I would like to add some smaller fish, but I wanted these two as the "centerpiece" set I guess. I've done a ton of reading and questioning before I set this tank up, and so far everything has worked out great. I just need to take it slow and see what happens.

You're welcome :)

I agree, I too love the 2 tangs together!

I think once Chip starts stretching his stomach and eating more that he'll start eating other foods. I never had luck with pellets like other people have but mine loves home-made frozen food and rods food. Now that he is eating he will do better and better with time. Good luck :)
