Powder blue tang with ich

So I came home today and noticed that the yellow tang has a little red piece hanging out of the gill slit. What the hell could that be/mean?

It sounds like he has a bacterial gill disease. It need to be treated with antibiotics. This usually comes from poor water quality with high ammonia or some other toxins. You can use any one of the broad spectrum antibiotics made for use in a saltwater tank. Kanamycin is one of the better ones out there and the standard dosage is 50-100 mg per gallon added to the tank water every 2-3 days for two weeks. Quit any carbon filtration during treatment.

I'm pretty anti medication in most cases, but I guess I can look for it. I don't even take for myself unless I'm basically dying. The YT might be in one of these extreme cases. He seems to be eating a bit more, and he is out in the open for the entire day, but he hasn't put on any weight.

If he has red gills he needs the meds. I had one die in the past because I didn't know any better then years later it happened again and got the meds. He survived due to that I'm sure.

So I bought the medication but I decided to wait a few days to see if he would actually eat. I know a lot of medications suppress hunger and in his state that would probably be the end of him. I kept soaking the nori in garlic and vitamins and sure enough he started eating. His appetite seems to be getting bigger and bigger each day. My girlfriend actually noticed he's gaining weight. He looks like hell be going in the DT soon (maybe a week or 2). I can't believe he made a turn around like this.

Yea he still has a pinched stomach, but he looks like he's gaining weight every day. I'm guessing his stomach will be like that until his body gets back to normal? I can't believe he's going to make it after all this. Thank you so much everyone for your help!

Normally in these cases the stomach will bulge before he starts getting body mass back, it sounds like he's making a recovery though. Keep soaking his food in vitamins (ease up on garlic if he's getting his appetite back), and feed as much as he can eat! Very glad to hear he's doing better.

I think I have him recovering. Once he started eating I noticed he had string poo, but it wasn't white it was still brown. I thought well maybe his body isn't used to eating so I gave him 2 days. After that I decided to dose prazi pro and he's on the second treatment. It's all over this coming Wednesday, so I hope to have him in the DT Sunday.

I also dosed the DT because the PB was never treated, I didn't see any problems, but I thought it would be the best thing to do. I don't want to take any chances. It looks like this whole thing is almost over. Thanks for asking! Ill update the thread in a few days.

So I think chip is going in the DT tomorrow. He still has trouble cutting poop off though. It's brown, but it stays with him for a while. After 2 weeks of prazipro I have to imagine the worms are dead no? No one is showing signs in the DT either so I think it's time.

Chips hlle is clearing up, his face doesn't look like a skeleton, and his fins are looking new. He still has a pinched stomach, but I think it has to improve over time no? I mean what else can this poor thing have that I haven't teated yet?

Chip is in the DT happy as can be. I don't think I've seen a fish swim more in my life. He's eating all he can and the PB for the time being is not paying any attention to him. Thanks again for all the help everybody!!
