Powder Blue Tang

As usual I read the posts AFTER I jump in and buy something. :o

I bought a blue tang from a LFS Sunday and it looked good in the store. Now it's getting white bumps on it. It's acting OK and is eating a bit (when it comes out from the rocks).

So, short of taking apart 200 pounds of live rock to catch it, what are my options for treating?

My specs are:
110g tank, 30g sump/refug
210 lbs live rock
TH 240; Alk 180; pH 7.5; NO2 0; NO3 0; AM 0

Livestock:
Yellow Tang; False Perc; Tomato Clown; Bi Color Blenny; Viamingi Tang; Blue Tang; 1-Emerald Crab; 4-hermits; 1-coral banded; 4-Pepermint shrimp; 2-snails; Mushrooms; kenya tree; leather; pulsing xenia; yellow polyps; pipe organ coral

Thanks!
David

Oh man. Put it in your qt tank and starve the ick out for a couple weeks. Get it out fast before it spreads.

garlic worked wonders for me, although I never saw ich.

My guy was flashing on the rocks. Garlic made him eat better, it was all nutrition.

I have no Qt tank,so that was not an option.

I still use garlic at every feeding for my two tangs.

Yes, garlic xtreme is suppose to boost immune systems and entice the fish to eat. If there is any truth to that or not I don't know, but my fish had ich and I started with garlic xtreme and it was gone. As long as the fish keeps eating and is fat it should be good.

I agree. If you can't get it to a quarantine tank, garlic is your best option. I've heard many reputable people recommend it.

powder blue are prone to ich.that is one fish that should be in a q tank.it is most likely stressed from being moved to a new tank.make sure no one is picking on it.especially the yellow tang.if the ich does not spread to the other fish you should be ok.

Question you can afford a 110 gallon tank but you cant afford a qt tank for the fish you put in your main tank, i think your other tangs and other fish will get Itch also, it always will pay off qt'ing a fish before putting it in the main tank.

My powder blue came down with a moderate case of ick the first month of having it. The ick didn't spread to any of my other fish, one of which is a yellow tang. I kept feeding a good variety of foods while adding garlic to them along with the daily strip of nori. The ick went away, never to return. Two years later all is well.

Most fish stores sell liquified garlic additives. But you can put actual pieces of garlic cloves in with their food. I have (and I'm sure alot of other people) used minced garlic on many occasions.

I was under the impression that the only way to cure a fish of ich is quarantine and copper.

I thought that garlic was a good preventive measure and does help, but ultimately does not cure...Am I wrong? (wouldn't be the first time..)

yeah, things like garlic and UV help with ich infections but they cannot cure it. The only way to keep ich from showing up ever again would be to remove all fish to QT and leave the display tank fallow for about 6 weeks.

My PBT went through QT but not all of the rest of my fish did and he occasionally gets a few spots on his fins. I run UV to keep free floating parasite loads low and he gets a good diet so it has never become an issue. He's the only one in the tank who ever has any signs, they really are ich magnets.

i've read the bottled garlic is just to entice them to eat food. it gives it a powerful flavor.

supposedly after you crush the garlic it looses a certain element -or whatever it's called - over time. and it's that element which is best for the fish...therefore, bottled garlic is just flavored juice.

anyway, just what i read.

garlic is also an immune stimulant which helps them fight off the infection. I'm not sure which garlic product your talking about degrading... do you have a reference?

Soak some nori with garlic and hang the clip in the tank...

Feed him up and get him fat...

my tangs LOVE nori to no end.. they also love mysis like its out of style...

Soak all food with garlic and maybe selcon/zoe...

Good Luck :)
